Seeing I did not get my tractor in the late of the year and got to use my Ratchet Rake I got from ordering off of the TBN store I will not be able to make deer food plots. So I went out and bought a deer feeder plus 25 lb blocks of lick to feed them over the winter.

So my first project is to clear out about a small slice of land to make some kind of a burn point out in the open so I don't have to worry about burning down my forest. The photo's are from the East side of the land and since the loggers came in you can see there is small saplings that need to come up.

What I am trying to do is have some kind of safety area when weather permits and do a safe burn and not like my wife last year. Last year she wanted to use the burn barrel and burnt down 5 acres of our backyard and took 5 hours to put it out and her excuse was I just turned around for a moment.

Every time I make a pass I get off the tractor and walk the lane I want to dig up and always find hidden oak or cedar stumps and very afraid I will damage my bucket and rake. Now I know the tractor is not to be used as a dozer but this is my first project and I am going to burn up some good fire wood when I am done.

This project is going to take time and if I do it right I might get a pond out of this.

My approach to something like that is work hard to get the area mow-able first. Then go back and work on the stumps as time permits. I would get rid of those saplings over the entire area you want to work on as a first step.

If you walk the area strip by strip and mark the stumps somehow, paint, ribbons, etc., you can avoid them more easily. The old truck driving GOAL (get out and look) method is worth remembering. :)

Stumps are a pain. One thing is to go slowly, very slowly. Even when you think you know where the stumps are, there will always be a few surprises.

:DJust a small update and I know you folks love pic's but I took dave 1949 advice and I went out and bought a load of small red flags. Some of these cedars and oak stumps are only two inches tall so I still have to walk the lanes that I want to clear. Up to this point I have cleared around 20 stumps and like I said this is going to be a slow clearing. I love the smell of cedar in the morning it smells like victory.0822131748.jpg0923131446.jpg0923131447.jpg0923131445b.jpg

Another small update now the wife wants to get evolved in helping me a make a burn pile. This is not going to last long when she goes to my wood piles to transfer wood to my burn pile for the fact the first time she runs into a rattlesnake will be her last time in the wood piles. This is a woman that is afraid to death of lizard"s and frogs and now she thinks she can work the wood piles? Oh well will keep you updated with photo's cause I know you guys like them and 13 more piles to go.
