Want to convert my 8n to 12 volt any ideas

a front mount N eh?

the EASIEST way is to get your genny rebuilt as 12v and have the rebuilder get you the correct regualtor to go with it, and then get a dropping resistor for the ignition or a new 2.5 ohm coil and run either of those with the original ballast resistor. plus need to change out lamp elements to 12v. and reduce fuse size to match. plus get a 12v battery.

If you go alternator.. you need the 12v bat.. and setup as negative ground. do the lamps and fuse. use a delco 10/12 si style 3 wire alt.

you can cut your oe genny bracket to make a bracket for the alternator, and use the top area of thetiming cover / governor area as a lower mount spot.

remove old regulator. connect charge stud tot he wire that used to go to battery on old reg. reverse leads on ammter.. or if loop style.. run wire thru other direction.

jump #2 spade lug to the charge stud.

jump the #1 spade and hook it to the coil side of the key switch. put a holder inline that uses a 194 marker lamp.

key on + lamp on.. startup and get to 400-450 rpm and the lamp goes off and she will be charging.

you will likely have to swap your pulley and may need a new belt length. rember your N is 5/8 belt. not 1/2.. and you don't want a belt bottomed out in a pulley. it xmits power on t he sides.

make sure you arange it so that the belt does not rub the dizzy, and also that the front axle does not rotate up enough so that the steering arm contacts the alt. ( worn king pin or bad geometry can cause this. )
