I would be having a serious discussion with the guy that borrowed it...

I'd also be interested in knowing how it happened. I've had several rotary cutters over the past 40 years and have ruined many blades but have never destroyed the gear box, shaft or pan. Wow, what a bummer. The MX6 is a well built cutter and will take a lot of punishment.

A good neighbor would not have brought it back until HE fixed it. Sorry for your bad luck.

Have you checked Deere parts to see of the bent shaft is available?? It would be cheaper if you could supply the labor. The dealer may not want to spend the shop hrs to rebuild.

I broke my MX6 output shaft and an currently in the same boat. The new shaft from John Deere is around $450. I cannot find a generic box with a long enough output shaft to go through the double deck. If anyone has found one or knows where I can get a used shaft I would love to know.

I had the same question and all I do it hit them with my 3/4" impact. I clean the bolts up good before hand, etc.

Don't need any fancy torque multipling device with a 3/4" impact. I have one of those and there are not too many things that can't be loosened or tight enough.

He must have hit an old slab that goes to China or something that got pulled up and wedged between blade and deck. Not good. Can't believe a replacement shaft costs $450. I could believe it if it were a low production item but for something that they make thousands of, it should be half that much.

Hi all. I am first timer here, with a similar problem. I turned MX6 on its side, leaning against a tree. When I turn the stump jumper by hand it wobbles. I cannot tell if the shaft or the stump jumper or both are bent. I would like to take stump jumper off of shaft.
Is there some special procedure? I loosened bolt in end of shaft a couple of turns and rigged a chain and a 6 ton jack so jack was pushing on bolt head, and chain was pulling on stump jumper. I put rust stuff on shaft a bunch and left it under pressure for two weeks. Every once in a while I would smack it a couple times. Anybody have a plan "B"? I am assuming it has a keyed or splined shaft.

Seems like something like that happens to me "every" time I loan a piece of equipment. I would suggest you just keep the trashed on just like it is and loan it out to anybody that askes you for a shredder. Go get you a new one and keep it out of sight and never loan it out.

I just looked online at the parts schematic and wow, that shaft is over $400. OUCH. It is a much simpler shaft than I imagined. I had thought that the bevel gear was part of the shaft but it is just splined on each end with threads on both ends for a nut and cotter pin. That shaft made on modern CNC equipment should be made in about 30-45 minutes max possibly quicker with modern hobbs mounted on lathes. It shouldn't cost a customer more than maybe $200 bucks. Depending on the heat treat condition, it could possibly be cold straightened if not bent more than 1/16 of runout. I've cold straightened outboard motor shafts but by all means, BE CAREFUL if you do it. Make sure nobody is around when you try it out and keep it low to the ground so in case it breaks.

Al Jenny, if you have the lower nut off, it is just splined. You'll probably need a puller of some sorts to get it off.

Thx for info, however there is a bolt screwed into a tapped hole in end of shaft.
Someone told me they thought it would be a tapered spline. I have machined some splines and some tapered shafts but not a tapered spline. I don't think it is even possible.
Someone mentioned a place on line with a parts break down. Does it show a picture of this area?
Please/thx Al

go to deere parts online. You have to create an account with a name and a password but I don't remember that you have to give anything else.

I had something like that happen to me. I loaned out a brush hog and the guy bent the drive shaft. I told him not to try to cut down 5 foot tall brush in one swipe. I told him to set it high the first time and go in low gear about 2 miles per hour. Instead, he set it low and went about twice as fast as he should have. The drive shaft bent under the stress. He told me about it and took the drive shaft to get it fixed. If your friend that you loaned the brushhog is a decent person, he should bear the responsibility of getting it fixed. Period!

When I rebuilt the gearbox on my brush hog a few years ago I had to use a 20 ton press to remove the stump jumper from the shaft after removing it from the gearbox. When it came loose it shot out like a bullet, make sure to pad the area under the press so you won't have to file the threads like I did.
It was a Severs CY60.
