I plan on buying a new tractor later this year. One thing I'll need the rig to do is to operate a quality 6ft. medium-duty cutter, likely an MX6. A 5 footer will not do for me. Right now, the JD 990 and 3720 are among the green candidates.

The JD website specifies a minimum 30 PTO hp for the MX6, which both the 990 and 3720 easily provide. Yet, using JD's "build it" program from their website, the MX6 does not appear as an available add-on option for either of these tractors; the beefiest cutter listed as an option is the MX5.
Is this because the 3720 and 990 are weight-constrained to have the weight of the MX6 on its rear? FWIW, I plan on equiping the machine with an FEL on the other end.

If the 3720 or 990 truly cannot handle the MX6, I'll just have to buy a bigger tractor!

Thoughts?

Hi farmlegend,

The MX6 is a bit heavier than the MX5, but I don't think thats why they set up the configurator that way...

The "set-up" the manual calls for is to have the rear wheels set wider than the cutter's overall width, or as wide as possible if that can't be accomplished, so you aren't trying to mow stuff you've flattened with the wheels...

Neither tractor will ever get that wide between the tires, so that's probably where they draw the line.

Power & weight-wise either one should turn & lift that cutter with room to spare, you'll just be mowing stuff you've run over... heck it's not a finish mower, right? /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Enjoy the MX6, if that's the direction you go in--don't discount Woods, Bush-Hog & Rhino though--they may not be that pretty Deere green, but have some rabid followers here on TBN... I'm partial to the Woods, but didn't meet the recommended PTO...

Of course the MX-5 has been bulletproof for me so far... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I have the MX6.

Forget being able to use iMatch with it on those machines.

It'll work. But be sure and consider a 4000TWENTY if that is an important attachment

I currently have a 990 with an MX-6. I would recommend that you try the combination before you purchase it. The horsepower of the 990 is marginal for that cutter. I don't know if it would lift it without a loader either.
