Must Have Shop Items

/ Must Have Shop Items #191
I built my first shop after my Eldest Son was grown and had left home. 2nd Son was a Senior in HS. 3rd Son was a Freshman.

I waited too long. I should have built it 10 years earlier and shared it with my Sons.

If you would use a shop, build it now, by whatever means is needed. Especially if you have kids at home.

That reminds me- when I built a swingset for our preschooler, I put it right outside of the detached shop, rather than in the immediate yard. We spent a lot of time out there together, each doing our own thing.

Similarly, if you have shop room inside, a refrigerator box is a terrible thing to waste. They make a great hideout, with window holes and flapped doors. Extra credit if your child gets to decide where the holes go.

A guy could use this 2-pole contactor. >$15 https://www.homedepot.com/p/Noark-4...ERCH=REC-_-pipsem-_-300813253-_-300812706-_-N

Use this to time the contactor's coil. Rated for 220v at higher amps that required for the contactor. <$30 FF6MC - Intermatic - Commercial Spring Wound In-Wall Timer Switch | 1Bulbs.com

Hooking these up is as intuitive and as simple as it looks. Neutral and ground wires are not switched with a 2-pole switch setup.

That's what I have ... crank it past 10 or 15 and I'm usually good for most of what I do. Mine's only 110 though.

^^ Maybe a container to toss your finger(s) in?

Thank goodness, I have never even come close to injury when using the table saw or miter saw. The safest tool in the shop (at least I used to think so) bit my fingers real good one time.... the drill press.... yes the drill press! I had it on top speed, countersinking some oak with a brad point spiral wood bit. I thought it was in the chuck correctly, but only 2 of the teeth had hold of it. When it made contact with the wood, it started spiraling around and put about 10 slices down the length of my index finger before I even knew what was happening!

I wrapped it up in my t-shirt and went in the house.... some cleaning, gauze pads, and tape....I was good as new. Until the pain started half hour later. I was lucky for sure. I now have respect for even the simplest tool.... including screwdrivers.... that is another story for later:shocked:

I like the contactor Idea Richard has, I have always been around compressors wire hot 24/7. In my new shop I have been thinking about a way to shut it off, the compressor is outside the shop area in my cold storage area and with two walk in doors it was going to be a lot more wiring but my lights are all wired with three way switches so all I will need to do is tap into one of the light fixtures closets to the compressor wiring.

Yep, just have to get the DPST version.

That's a new one me too. So can you explain the crank timer a little more? I manually select a time period or program it or what? Thanks!!!
This is the one that I ordered: https://www.amazon.com/Intermatic-FF12HHC-Timer-Brushed-Finish/dp/B000LDEO26/
12 hour time limit, crank to set how long you will be in the shop, switches both hot lines.

Has anybody mentioned First Aid stuff yet?

My more complete kit is in the shop. Other odds and ends throughout the house, but I always know this kit is good.
