i can sit and watch these videos for hours. north of me there is a guy that films
around alex bay on the st lawrence, they are great videos of the river, ships, just
great footage to see from above.

This is probably the same person who has done work for realtors and the sheriff's department in this county. The same one who got some crap from FAA.
I'm about 25 minutes from Alexandria Bay.

That is one thing that really chaps me....the FAA goes after a guy that helps law enforcement find a missing person.....then the fed comes after him.

Not a missing person, but still an example of the folks helping out law enforcement:

And here, they get crap from the FAA:

How timely.

I just got my first cheap quadcopter drone mid-august. 60 bucks off amazon.

One "tip" if the wind is calm at ground level, it can still gust and howl at 200ish ft and blow the thing a couple hundred yards into the neighbors bean field.

Sigh.

Now im flying a 2nd quad with lights that can be found in waist high plants! (Never found the first one :()

My $0.02, start on a cheap quad, learn to fly it so when you get cocky the loss won't be as painful.

We use or try to use Quad Drones in hollywood. Its easy to bite at the FAA at this point, but they are trying to establish rules for the use of these machines. Because of the miltitude of concerns they up until recently completely banned the use of them in a for rent situation, as well as tried to enforce a no fly outside of private property. They really have two major downsides, one is invasiton of privacy, and the other is that, at least for us in Hollywood, are uninsured or underinsured. I can see the FAA requiring some sort of license for anyone in a for hire situation. For hire including the sale or posting of any footage.

I know Yellowstone bans the use of drones, and probably all national parks. I figure state parks will follow soon.

But yes, I do want one. A buddy of mine who captains luxury yachts around the world has some amazing footage.

The latest "thing" is drones that will automatically follow you, so if you are a downhill skier or in a sailboat race, you can get overhead footage. Pretty cool.

50 lbs, 30 minute flight time with full programmable auto-pilot? Rut Roh!.. that is what is known in the defense industry as a "fire and forget" offensive weapon.
Heck if it just fell out of the air after flying straight up for 30 minutes would be a big problem.

I'm in the market for one myself. I've been looking at X-Heli a lot as I've bought some stuff from them in the past.

I already have a GoPro so that's covered. A gimble would be nice, but I don't think it's needed, at least not as a priority. GPS with auto return is something I think of as an insurance policy!
If the quad or hex copter is big enough I'm guessing that additional capability can be added later? Is that right?

About all my flashlights already use Li Ion cells so I'm comfortable with them and the required safety issues. Never go to far away from charging or freshly charged cells!

The unit in your video looks like a Walkera QR X350. s that right? Are you happy with it? One of my uses is to video pistol matches from down range. I just need to be sure my buddies don't shoot too high!
You know all about this but to repeat your statement about safety issues, the Li Ion used in RC are usually made as light as possible, with as high an energy density as possible, because of that, they are much more susceptible to malfunction with a catastrophic discharge. For anybody getting into the hobby, the batteries deserve a lot of respect. There was a house fire around here a few months ago that was tracked down to a Li Ion battery being charged.

I fly a collective pitch heli and a few quads, all are electric and think they are a blast to fly!!

interesting thread, i always wanted to get a rc helicopter, or like, but never could justify expense, watching the videos, is teasing me!,

though over last couple years, been more wanting a cheapie, to mess around with the pups. dangle a toy on a string and fly it around, and let them chase/jump after it.

though now after seeing the videos, i could see having a longer battery life unit, and running it around the farm. checking on livestock more so in muddy/wet/snow/ice conditions in pasture, checking flood gates, checking out some hills with washouts happening, "not easily mow areas". running a unit around the lake/pond edges to watch some fish from the sky. tossing a unit quickly out the door, and sending up higher, when i see some deer, or like out in the fields, (any time of the year) or other wildlife (coyotes, etc...) i could see use of checking gutters being a good use! breaking out the extension ladder or taller ladder can be a chore at times. checking on various farm fields, and seeing how the corn/beans are doing (zoom in / birds eye view) without having to drive / walk into the fields.

==========
i am scratching my head some, granted personal flying to and from work everyday is not a current doing, but what is the FAA and folks going to do when technology catches up to allow such a thing. everyone has prying eyes, just because they are not at ground level...

i can understand FAA wanting to deal with overall height from ground, and getting into actual airspace for actual air planes and helicopters with folks in them being a no no. and folks going over there property line as a no no, but to not allow a person to make money via use with a remote control unit... i would say is going a bit to far. and over stepping there bounds, i can see issuing a licenses / permit, to going above a certain height, and if need be a training course, or more likely a drivers course (eye, test, actual driving tests) for driving a car, but perhaps for a RC unit. i could see an insurance company requesting this or that notation (permit or like training) for a company.

the more i think about it, i guess i can see why FAA could see a RC unit like an actual air plane or helicopter with folks in it. but i would think it would be better treated with a federal -> state -> county -> city like approach vs FAA controlling it all i guess. though with size of RC units now vs latter down the road. and states / counties / cities, actually needing to pay folks to deal with things... and more likely folks placing work on the FAA to deal with it. vs forcing state / counties and like to deal with it...

i could see why government stand point as far as terrorists, but soon enough there will be unmanned vehicles on the road ways, if not already, that could be classified in same doing. (driver less tractors in fields)

*rubs chin* i guess i am waiting to see the true "3D" google maps, not just roads and driving directions for cars, trucks, bikes, etc... but also airplanes, helicopters, and like. being a true 3D space with various road's in the sky per say, and on the ground. when i say "in the sky per say" given height from ground, (z axis), X,Y coordinates for flying north/south, east/west. i guess i am waiting to see "rules of the road" of driving on left side of road in one country, vs right side of road in another county, but for in the sky, and if you want to travel S, being at X altitude, and if N another altitude, and if you want to turn, needing to go higher or lower in altitude, to deal with given change in direction. that everyone follows, vs randomly flying about in the sky, and if need be relying on some central control tower air space.
