I've read that coal is coming back for heating in stoves. What I can't seem to get a handle on is there a stove that burns coal, pellets or corn? What kind of coal would it use? I'm considering a multifuel stove and would like to be able to have the option of coal, pellets or corn if this is possible. Anyone know if this is possible? bjr

Pellets and corn require special feeder/hopper mechanisms so I am doubtful you will ever see one that also does coal.

When I bought my pellet stove I got one that can also do corn.... just in case pellet prices got crazy. Well, pellet prices have gone up but corn prices have gotten crazy

Even though pellets have gone up quite a bit they are still cheaper than the propane that my furnace uses. I figure my pellet stove will pay for itself in 4.5 to 5 years depending on what happens to the price of pellets and propane.

ive researched it a bit hopeing for a hybrid of all 4...

but they seem to be broke down in to 2 types.

pellet-corn
and
coal-wood

mostly anything in a pelet type form can be burnt in a pellet style stove due to the feed and grate thats used.

most wood stoves will burn coal just not as effenctly as a coal stove (with grate) will.

Ill likely go with a wood-coal version as im in IL coal country.

Does Eastern Washington have much of the proper coal? I live very near a city named black diamond, a current coal town with huge strip mines, and the coal is the soft kind which isn't the kind burned in the coal stoves which I gather is a hard or rice coal.

You'd be well served by a biomass stove such as a countryside that can burn corn and pelelts plus whatever else comes along such as cherry pits, sunflower seeds and various grass pellets.

That's was one of my questions I was hoping to get answered was, is there a pelletized coal? What are the different options on coal stoves, I mean lump type coal, maybe somekind of ground up coal? I don't know coal. Winter will be here too soon. bjr

If you can't secure a supply of coal easily then I would bag the idea completely. No suppliers to deliver it, no stove shops to service it. It's like buying a cordwood stove in an area with no trees, maybe Iowa?

Coal burns much hotter and with nasty exhaust than biomass products like wood. The pelletized coal suitable for hopper fed untis is I believe rice coal. You need tons of the stuff.
