Rotary Cutter mower rpm question for ford 3400 tractor

I just bought a ford 3400 tractor 4 speed with loader. I think the rpm is 540. I am going to an auction soon with different used mowers at it, and I was wondering how do I tell which ones are 540 rpm and what size 3pt mower would be best for this tractor?

I think they are all 540 RPM at the PTO. That is just the revolutions per minute the engine puts out at full throttle. Nothing to do with power or the size of the mower it can handle. I would guess your tractor has about 40 horsepower at the power take off. So a 6 foot single spindle mower should work fine. When you get into much higher horsepower you get tractors that are both 540 and 1000 RPM. In the power range you tractor is in all the implements are for a 540 pto......at least that I know of.....

If you look at the tractor end of the pto shaft , 540 rpm will have 6 splines and 1000 Rpm mowers will have I believe 21 splines ( usualy used in higher horsepower mowers. I used to own a ford 3400 and a 6 foot shredder worked fine behind it.

540 PTO RPM will be at 1800 ERPM, not full throttle on your Ford 3400.
