Mowing Mower Deck vertical storage problem

Each winter I store my 60" mower deck on its side in order to save shop space - - it also allows me easier access to the blades. This year I noticed a pretty good size puddle of oil under the deck - - I assume that is from the gear box leaking. I thought I had the plug screwed in well, but maybe not? Anyone else have that problem?
I'll have to check to see what kind of oil it takes - - i hope I have it on hand. It's almost time to give it its 1st workout of 2010.

I've been stowing my deck vertically for years and haven't had a problem. You may have a loose or missing filler plug or a bad gasket.

I had the same leak the first winter, then tightened all nuts and added fluid. The second winter had no leaks.

Most gearboxed have a vent on top. Did the oil come from a vent?

80-90 gear oil is what it takes, if you were asking. Supposed to replace the gear oil at 50 hours.

never had a leak yet.. but my bota manual states the oil seals needs to be repalced every 2 years- not sure why .

You've not said what brand you have, but my Kubota RCK60B deck has not leaked....yet. I replaced the lube in mine with WalMart 75-90w synthetic.

My deck leaked out of the breather hole the first year I had it perpendicular to the floor. Since then I leaned it up against the wall slightly less than vertical and no leak. More than likely that is the origin of your leak.
