Dirt Moving Moving gravel with a carry all

You've got a good eye. The pad is 23'X43'.

I did try moving some gravel with the samurai once. Filling the little bed only half full bottomed out the suspension. I was worried about breaking something. The samurai has got some beach rot on the underside.

I do have a small utility trailer at the cabin. And a 6000# excavator.

I don't like taking the old excavator down on the beach in case a track falls off and the tide comes in.

So maybe I should fill the trailer and samurai with the tractor. Drive to the pad, and scrape the gravel out of the trailer with the excavator.

This sounds like a three man job.

Problem is, my help always wants to go fishing.

If the trailer is sturdy enough, I would just use the excavator to lift the tongue up and dump the gravel out all in one shot.

I'm not surprised the little Samurai won't take much gravel, but that's a really neat little beach/woods rig. The same dimensions as a side by side UTV, basically, but with a cab, heater, and street legal!

You can limp the excavator even if a track falls off. You use the bucket as a crutch and the good track to move you foward. If both fall off, your outta luck! :laughing:

International, the trailer ball on the samurai is right next to the exposed fuel tank. I try and connect/disconnect trailers as little as possible. Don't want to poke a hole in the tank. Need to make some modifications, maybe go pintle hitch.

I just bought a 20' stick of 3" angle iron to make a carry all. I'm not going to use it to move gravel. I'll use it to move supplies from the boat to the cabin.

Is it a good idea to weld a hitch on the back of the carry all, so it can be used as a ballast box when pulling a trailer? In the fall we pull the boats out of the the water for the winter. The samurai is too small to pull the larger boat (25ft aluminum w/ single outboard). I'm hoping the 1820D can do the job.

Im sure it will pull the boat easily. I pull my heavy bass boat, a 17ft javalin with a 150hp johnson GT on it around like its not there. The boat and all weighs somewhere under 3K i think.

I don't know were you are located and what the price of clear stone is in your area, but, have you considered just getting a 10-14 yard truckload of gravel and have him dump it in the pad. Then use your tractor for the grading. If a load cost $200 but the repairs on a broken piece of equipment cost $400 plus getting stuck a few times, I would just consider calling it in. :thumbsup:

Gee- I dont see any other way to do it other then just start working and use your FEL to move gravel. You just need time to do it. getting a rear scoop is better then carry all as its designed to scoop and dump from 3 pt hitch. I wouldn't worry about getting a trailer or wagon as after seeing pics of your beach to drive over is pretty rough. Its doable but its no fun.

You never know if you need more gravel again for something so its something that will be usefull. It can double as a carry all but I suspect a real carry al is more useful- after all you can't have too many toys. :thumbsup:

No chance of getting a truckload of gravel delivered. There is 40 miles of ocean between me and the nearest dump truck.
It can be done, but it involves chartering a big landing craft.

I just finished building a carry all. I'm not going to use it to move gravel, I've got plenty of other uses for it.

I would like to get a rear scoop. For now I have the FEL, and a small unsprung but heavily-built utility trailer to try out.

The guy lives in Alaska, my guess is that its going to be quite a bit more if you can get it there, but still something to consider.
