I have an old trailer and the existing axle doesn't look too good. It's pitted and pretty rusty. I'm only using it to haul my snowmobile which weighs about 500 lbs. However, it's not a cheap machine and I don't want it bouncing down the highway one morning because the axle broke in two /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

My question is....Can I weld something like angle iron (1 1/2 x 1 1/2) to the axle to give it some strength? I bought new bearings and races for the hubs and the spindles look good.

Thanks,

Jim

Jim,

Without more detail regarding the type of materials, shape, etc. of the current axle under your trailer, it's hard to recommed what type of reinforcement would be best.

I would'nt weld new angle on to it, sometimes old brittle steel will break right next to where you weld the new material. The heat from welding may well weaken the existing axle.

You might see if you can use large U bolts, the same type that hold the axles to the spring perches on newer trailers, to strap a piece of angle or channel across the top or bottom of the existing axle and span the center between the springs. This would reinforce the axle without weakening it.

Just an idea for you to consider.

Good luck,

DT

DT,

That is an excellent idea! I'll do exactly that with some U bolts. I didn't want to weld the axle anyway. If it gives me any problems I'll just buy a new axle, which is what I should be doing now.
