Thanks, about the only other language words I know are not fit to be posted on this board. Seems funny, the first words most immagrants learn are those types of words as well.

I agree with all of your gripes, and have another one to add. Anyone in the computer business will probably have run across this one before. Manuals which were obviously written in another language, and then poorly translated into broken english. Trying to decypher these things is only slightly more complicated than the German enigma coding scheme. Sometimes even the writing on the outside of the boxes is translated poorly. Once my wife bought our daughter one of those battery operated cars that the kids can ride in, (Like a Power Wheels, but this one was foriegn) and on the box it was described as an "Electrification Children Car" enuf said.

After reading the post “TBN Etiquette & Our Responsibility to each other..” I just want to make it clear that it was not my intention to criticize anyone who doesn’t speak English. I don’t care what race or nationality a person is. I was just griping that it doesn’t seem fair to inconvenience me and all other English speaking Americans in order to make it convenient for people who don’t speak English and have chosen to live in America.

Sorry, couldn't pass this one up. I agree with your assessment. Being one generation away from my immigrant grandparents who changed their native language, culture, and proper spelling of their names to live and grow in this country. They weren't forced to change but it was made clear that they needed to change to be successfully integrated into American Society. If a large group of Americans were to settle in ANY country, do you think that we could influence that country/culture to allow us the same priviledges? I think not..... /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif

Since Indiana is one of the 27 states in the US that has established English as the official language, I fail to see how it is legal to spend tax dollars on billboards that are written entirely in Spanish. I have sent an email letter to Sandra D. Leek who is the director of the Indiana Civil Rights Commission. I also just found out about the organization <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.us-english.org/index2.htm>http://www.us-english.org/index2.htm</A>, which I intend to join soon!

You don't need to understand English if you want to live in America. You are welcome to come here and take advantage of the American opportunities and you are not required to give anything back to this country.

Couldn't you assume that even though the default language is English there might well be a number of spanish speakers who, though they are working to learn english, are not yet proficient in the language? Does it inconvenience you for them to be helped in this way? Most immigrants to this country contribute their share, even while still learning the language. Unless you grow all your own food, you eat the products of their labor. I like the idea that instructions to someone who might be working on my food supply will be understood....I find the understanding to be more important than the language used.

Chuck - I can see that side of it. What bothers me is that billboards cost a lot of money. So, if they want to help people who haven't learned to communicate in English yet, then spend the money on something that's going to help them. Not things like this. My translation was obviously sarcastic. The real translation is that it's telling them they can't be discriminated against. Everybody in the world already knows discrimination is not legal in America. Spend the money on something useful! The other thing that bothers me is that the gov’t should not spend my tax money putting up a billboard that the average American can not read.

True, both points. As an aside, I wish we as a society made more effort to learn other languages. I'm certainly no poster boy for the idea. I lived in Puerto Rico for four years and only learned how to order beer or coffee, and know when I was being cussed at. Two of my kids speak pretty passable spanish. Ever noticed how no matter where they are in the world, our journalists can almost always find a local to interview who speaks english? Our foreign graduate students not only speak english, their grammar is often better than that of the american students.

I have experienced that also. When someone learns a language as an adult in a classroom they learn the grammar better than someone who learns it by listening to others use incorrect grammar while growing up. I get real tired of hearing "I ain't never going to do that again!" and other similar stuff. Another one that cracks me up is "I'll unthaw the hamburger".

I sure agree with that. I took a year of high school Spanish in my sophomore year. It was a two year course and that summer we moved to another town and the high school there didn't teach Spanish. I've always regretted not getting that second year and completing my education in Spanish, but still wasn't smart enough to get into the Spanish courses in college./w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif

"I seen" seems to be entering the language as correct usage. You know, maybe we shouldn't worry about which language is dominant. If we wait a bit they're all going to inter-breed! Kinda like people? The French have periodic fits about the "americanization" of their language. We use numerous foreign words without even thinking about them. Maybe some day we'll all speak something like esperanso (sp?) without ever consciously deciding on that course.
