Hi Just got to try my new used john deere 790,moving snow with bucket and it seems all good. I did notice it seems to have a fair amount of gear whine when backing up,is that how they all are? And the yanmar engine sounds quite different than the New holland I used to have, seems to have a louder fuel knock, not bad just different! I like it so far I hope it turns out to be a reliable machine. Thanks

Yeah, it's a great little tractor. Just got in from some snow relocation with mine. Yes, the gear whine is there, especially reverse. I don't have much to compare to, but it does seem as though the engine is fairly noisy. Sure moves the snow though!

I have a New Holland TC30, and have been test driving some Deeres, including the 3005 (newer version of the 790). I'm not sure about the gear whine, but yes, the Yanmar in the Deere and the Shibura in the TC30 have two very different sounds. Sort of startled me the first time I started up a 3005. It (the Yanmar) wasn't actually running rough, but the sound is a rougher sound.

I've had my 790 for almost 4 years now and I have nothing bad to say about it. Good luck with yours.

You know, just from reading posts on here, I'm gonna bet that the 790/3005 is in the top three of tractors owned by TBN members with Deere tractors. It would be interesting to see a poll listing the model numbers and how many members own the various ones.
