Not one person in this thread has mentioned anything good about moonshine. I知 pretty sure that a quality liquor wasn稚 the idea with a poorly constructed illegal setup in the woods. But if you say so.

You must have missed the post where I said "smooth as silk"...

This area is renown for quality bootleg liquor...it's not even close to the rotgut most are familiar with TN, KY, VA etc......

Haven't tried moonshine but have tried a few Italian grappa's, they have varied from absolutely vile to tearing your throat out with a red hot grapple, smooth as silk was not the first thing that came to mind, however, a low grade hessian...
I saw few bottles of what my Father made that was passed off as Scotch, took a few weeks from start to bottling and I never tried it, it looked like scotch and no idea how it got to be that colour in a few weeks knowing that scotch is clear before being put to rest in barrels for a few years, maybe there is a use for used teabags.

Illegal... yes. Poorly constructed, no. A tremendous amount of work, knowledge, and skill is required to set up a still. And then there is the chemistry; these are not stupid people doing this, (I.E. no Tickle types). To get good liquor that is worth something is a challenge, and one that many families around these parts relied upon to pay the bills. But, that is just my opinion.

A local distillery; a local wine brewery; a local craft brewery; what’s the difference? They can all produce a perfectible product.

In the last few years there has been an influx of locally produced product. Much to the users benefit!

My alcohol progression over the years:
1969-1972: Boones Farm & Annie Green Springs wines with Cold Duck or Mad Dog 20-20 when my favorites were gone.

1972-1976: Whiskey or Gin Sours and Jack Daniels Black or Green label for sipping. Also, tried some mason-jar white stuff from West Virginia.

1977-2019: probably 4 light beers and a splash of Caroline's or Bailey's in my coffee.

I discovered a long time ago that I liked the taste of the hard stuff (maybe to much) and decided I didn't need alcohol to be happy. I also knew that many times I had no memory of driving home from work. I didn't want to be the guy that Drinks and Drives and kills someone. Glad I could stop.

Haha, sorry. I meant I've had maybe 4 beers in the last 40 + years and now just enjoy some Caroline's or Bailey's in my coffee on occasion.

No. It's constructed quite well. Just used what they could get/afford back then.
