Moonshining in the Blue Ridge

Yes, one can get very close to actual proof by watching the bead VS a hydrometer with a little practice.

As for "we", let's just say I have a lot of family in Kentucky and leave it at that... ;)

Maintaining old craft knowledge is a good thing.

I’d have to disagree 100 percent. A fine whiskey is one thing. Not my taste but whatever. Moonshine is purely to get drunk as fast and cheaply as possible. It’ll never happen but the world would be better off without it.

Depends on who's making it and for what purpose... :licking:

There is a lot to what you don't know. The makers in this area would have a lot to say about your ignorance.

Don't be so hard on him. When you see an 800 gallon submarine still made with galvanized metal, sipping quality doesn't come to mind.

I have no dog in this fight, but I do know people who do. And they would beg to differ with you.

Not one person in this thread has mentioned anything good about moonshine. I’m pretty sure that a quality liquor wasn’t the idea with a poorly constructed illegal setup in the woods. But if you say so.

Illegal... yes. Poorly constructed, no. A tremendous amount of work, knowledge, and skill is required to set up a still. And then there is the chemistry; these are not stupid people doing this, (I.E. no Tickle types). To get good liquor that is worth something is a challenge, and one that many families around these parts relied upon to pay the bills. But, that is just my opinion.
