With the steering out until tomorrow, I got on all of my mods...

First up was to open up the oil cooling baffel. It is Part 1 of a 2 part idea. From what I understand you do not want to restrict the outflow of air from the cooling. PT's 1850 engine is heavily restricted. The opening being just half the surface area. At first I was going to cut up some tin and make a whole new baffel, but then I saw Alta's mod and it gave me an idea. In my head opening the sides allows the air to stay in the engine compartment. Also, I cannot weld yet (have welder, just no real ability). So I drilled a hole 1.5" down the side plate, and then took a peice of 1/2" gas pipe and cut a 1.5" spacer.. 2 bolts and $3.00 later....

Part 2 of the idea is figuring a quick way to open the bottom plate to allow cleaning. Also, I have noticed some air blowing up by the injectors, I figure if I plug those holes up I should force more air through the cooler...

Next was the Tiny Tach. $65.00. On the 1850 I nearly did not have enough cable so order 3 extra feet...

I did a poor job of finish work on the installation. I could not cut the dash plate good enough, so I surface mounted it. It works quite nicely and now I can guage the power I am at much more precisely. Also it has 3 timers so I know for sure when to do my 8 and 50 hour maintenance...

Mirrors and Lights. Mirror was out of JC Whitney and I just drilled two small holes through the roof (not the rops) to install... It is kind of hard to look at it instead of turning around but I am sure I will start using it more. Lights were cheapies from Gemplers. I think if I where to do it again I would go Ksimolos way, I think these pull too many amps and there are more efficient lights to be had...

Neighbor scarers. One of those I just had too's. Notice my foam head bumpers? They are completely trashed after just one week.

I just have to figure out a cup holder. Anyone know where I can get those old style basket ones that swing around? My current holder does not work on the slopes...

Carl,

You want a gimbled holder. Try West Marine, or any good chandler.

All the best,

Peter

I have an insulated cup with a magnet in the bottom that will hold it horizontal.
A search for Chalkley Cup may get you a link to it.

...

Careful with those bolts. They are all that holds the oil cooler metal-to-metal seal to the engine. I found out via an inadvertant oil change.

I had remembered hearing of your tale before.. So I did not bump the thing when I removed it, and the 1/2" pipe works as a great hold down (so far, have yet to drive it without the steering).

Good deal.
Raising the defelector over the engine oil cooler will help, it made a difference on mine.

Whats the PN of that Tiny Tach?

I love the skull on the hyd joy stick, reminds me of the drill outfit in the movie "Armageddon".

-=Billy, out.

Dropped my temp by at least 20 degrees. I am going to fill up some of the cracks with aluminum foil (where the injector lines run out) as there is a lot of air lost there...

You will totally love the tiny tach....
