MMM oil change

I am trying to figure out how to drain the oil from the gearbox on my MMM on my BX. It looks like you just have to let it drain out on the mower deck and mop it up. Is there a better way that I am missing?

Could you stand it up on it's side and use a funnel? I store it upright and then unscrew the plug. Less mess anyway.

Another way could be a siphon of some kind. But is it really necessary to change it?? The gear box doesn't get contaminated and the gears are big so a little grit isn't an issue.

Maybe just a magnet on an rod to absorb the particles?

I use an aluminum tray that came as a catch basin liner on my Weber grill. I have to bend and shape it some, but it catches the gearbox oil decently.

I stood the deck up on end against the garage wall and wedged a plastic qt chinese takeout soup container beneath the drain plug and the spindle guard. Didn't spill a drop! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I also debated over whether to change the gear oil, but after seeing all the dirt in it, I was glad I did.

Of course, I only have a 48" deck. Don't know if I would want to wrestle the bigger decks around like that. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
