Didn't find this through a search...

I know you shouldn't mix things like anti-freeze or acetone in your used oil when taking it in for recycling.
But, what about mixing in tranny fluid, old diesel fuel, or hydraulic fluid? How about old gasoline?
As long as they are all dino and not synthetic, aren't they all just different degrees of the same thing?
High school chemistry was a long time ago for me, but I suspect some of y'all probably have a lot of knowledge in this subject.
Thanks for your answers.

I don't know about diesel or gasoline, but the place where I dispose of my used oil accepts motor oil, transmission fluid, and hydraulic fluid all in the same bin.

Diesel should be OK since it is an oil based.. Gasoline would be NO-NO though..

Generally they will accept anything not chlorinated. Gasoline is fine, most petroleum products are fine. Antifreeze is not. Paint thinner is not. We mix transmission fluid, power steering fluid, engine oil, gasoline, kerosene, and diesel fuel. We keep all oil contaminated with coolant seperate and our waste oil hauler usually takes it away in seperate containers. He runs a chlorine test on our container before he will accept our oil EVERY time. We had a customer bring in oil mixed with paint 1 time and we had to pay nearly $500 to get it hauled. We now keep our container locked.

Brake fluid is a BIG NO-NO in used oil. I wonder if that is where the chlorine comes from? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

i have safely dumped oil, tranny fluid, hydraulic fluid (tractor), diesel, (and very very small amounts and diluted at that )gas.

Antifreeze, as others have said, are a NO NO.

my next dump of hydraulic fluid is going to my chainsaws....

Whats is the trouble with the brake fluid?

You said "my next dump of hydraulic fluid is going to my chainsaws.... " Could you explain that please? What can tranny fluid be used for on a CS?

Thanks,

David

Exactly, bar oil. And, not tranny, hydraulic...
