The town I moved from on the left coast has basically driven all industry out of town. The bay used to be lined with boat building, salmon canneries, lumber mills, a tissue mill, a marine shipping terminal, a plywood mill and a cold storage. All of these were along rail lines and each facility had at least one spur from one of three railroads. Between economic conditions and city regulation and permitting, every single industry is now gone except the cold storage. All that waterfront property is now high priced condo units, hotels, restaurants or parks. Of the three railroads, only one remains, and the city has tried regulating it too because it carries coal and oil, but they found that under the interstate commerce clause, they didn't have the authority. What used to be a thriving downtown located about a half mile from the waterfront, is now basically a homeless camp. Residents of the city say they don't feel safe being downtown during the day.

Sounds like a productive, well planned industrial park that creates a lot of jobs.
Too bad it’s gone. The people we put into power did that with onerous regulations.

Either way one wants to look at it, somebody is still making something in the US. Its might not be something we equate with productivity, but it's something of value and it's increasing except for a few years ago.

Adapt or be left behind. Re-educate if needed. There are hundreds of thousands of jobs available in the US today.

What Is Gross Domestic Product (GDP)?

Gross domestic product (GDP) is the total monetary or market value of all the finished goods and services produced within a country’s borders in a specific time period. As a broad measure of overall domestic production, it functions as a comprehensive scorecard of a given country’s economic health.

But that GDP used to in part represent machinery and steel going over seas, now it's bulk oil, bulk coal and the cups of Starbucks we purchase a $4 per cup.

But, but, but..... it's production in the US. We still produce goods and services. It's just not the same goods and services that were produced in the past. Things change.

Quick show of hands...

Who here wants to go work on an assembly line in a factory doing piece work?

Who wants to go and work in the furnace at a steel mill?

For that matter, I don't recall anyone on TBN ever mentioning that that is what they do for a living. Maybe they did and lost their job, but that hasn't been mentioned. Maybe they did and advanced off the line. But not many people WANT to work on an assembly line or in a hot steel mill when they can work some other job that's more comfortable.

I've seen some folks here that did maintenance at factories, or drove trucks to and from factories, but I see not one person on here ever saying that they sure would like to get a job working the line at a factory.

Everyone wants to complain about how things were, but in reality, not many of them actually want that job should it open up.

I think job place safety and pay has increased considerably since the depression…..I mean it’s not kiddie labor and robber barons anymore.
Besides, those factories are very robotic now.
Its a matter of security, Moss. We aren’t making the critical infrastructure, medicines and electronics we need to survive. There’s threat of a war. Covid CLEARLY illustrated our shortcomings and what we need to produce here. You can barely buy an American made truck, tractor or car anymore, not to mention antibiotics, over the counter meds, clothing, even food. Steel? forget about it. Now our energy sector is being decimated. Large electric turbines and transformers are coming from overseas.
You can show me graphs all you want. I know what I see and it’s not good.
Union factory jobs paid great money and benefits. Its all gone here. Might be hanging on where you are, but in the rust belt? Nope

And most poeple who say "nobody WANTS to work anymore!" are retired and living well.

There are excellent jobs in the US in Advanced Manufacturing - CNC Machinists, Automation Technicians, Maintenance Technicians, Robotic Technicians, Engineers of all sorts. The low skilled and unskilled manufacturing jobs did go overseas. Unfortunately too many working age men are waiting for yesterdays jobs to return rather than get the skills required for today's jobs. Adapt or suffer the consequences.

Aside from drugs. one of the reasons for the homeless problem is there aren't any low skill. repetitive, low self-motivation factory line jobs left. And that might be one of the reasons for the drug problem, no hope of being able to provide for themselves.

But in your profile you show yourself as living in the "corrupt rust belt". Just because the economy isn't good where you live doesn't mean it's that way everywhere. Those union jobs that paid "great money and benefits" are mostly gone because the workers priced themselves right out of a job. It's a global economy now, and if you can't compete you lose.

Sad but true. And those jobs aren't coming back. Long gone are the days when you could just show up at a factory and they'd teach you what you needed OJT. Some trades you can still learn on the job, but you have to be willing to do the grunt work and work your way up. Other trades like plumbing or electrician generally require some schooling to get in the door.
