mini welding table

I got quite a bit done today and I'll post pics shortly. Don't have a vice here for its spacing so I can't proceed.

I need buy one for this. Was looking at the HF one that's 6" and it got a pretty good reviews from the farm project guy. 6 in. Swivel Vise with Anvil

Here is photos. Top photo is a 1/2" plate we picked up today. I thought the holes might come in handy. 2nd photo is the old, old split truck rim a cleaned up and painted. (Note, I don't yet have a vice so I know where to put the 2" receiver section in the top)

One problem with bolting a vice to a welding tabletop like I suggested is weld spatter may (will?) find its way into threads left open.

I would think with an adequate coating of lube on the acme screw it would be a non-issue.
I have a bench vise with a shielded acme on 3 sides like this one (not mine) that negates the issue altogether:

I did similar with a 28"x30" rolling table with 3/8" top. I also did the vise with receiver hitch mount but I did the receiver vertical at the corner of the table. Either way is fine. I try to do as much of the smaller welding and cutting projects outside the shop if I can. Especially plasma cuts and hogging out weld beads with the grinders.

I cut this 1/2 plate off with my cordless makita grinder with a 4.5 cut-off wheel. Took just one wheel to do this 8" or 10" long cut. I was pleasantly surprised how fast it did it and when done, didn't hardly needed any clean up.

Didn't get any work done but did pick up a vice today. I didn't like the one I was looking at on-line and got a slightly heaver one at HF today. Where you see it in the pics is close to where it will be mounted.

Looks good! Move it forward a little, so a flat object in the jaw can go down past the edge of the table.

Just my own taste but a welding table, plus a vise on a separate grinder stand, is what I find practical.

Ya, the vice was so heavy, it was going to roll the whole thing over so it was just there for looks.
