MIG, TIG and a new helmet...

Here's one I'd like to try :)
I can think of many times it would haven been great - tight spaces - or no fogging from my breath.

I've used round welders goggles with two sets of #5 lenses (5+5=10) to do some welding where I couldn't get a full helmet. If I had to do a lot of welding, I would have needed to cover my face with something.

Not a link, but here's a pic for those who haven't seen one.

Those might be OK if the "CAP" would suffice for a hard hat. Most construction jobs now require a welder to wear a hardhat when welding so it is a bit heavy. I'm not too sure what the cap look is supposed to mean though. I always lay my hood down with the back facing the table. I had too many jokers putting water or dirt in it when laid down with the back facing up.

I didnt know you could double the lens in a goggle to get the benefit of a darker lens. I have a pair of goggles i use for oxy/acet, I might have to give your trick a try the next time I am wadded up in a tight hole trying to make a spark. I might endup looking like a raccoon when its over tho.

Two shade 5 lenses put back to back doesn't equal a shade 10 lens. It might be a little darker but not much.

Your going to have to explain a little bit. Math says 5+5 should equal 10 so there must be something else at play here.

Take two shade fives, and compair them to one shade ten. Look at the sun or something. You can also make a shade 13 by pairing an 8 and a 5.

So, If I wanted a shade 10 I could use a #5 and a #6 and that would equal a #10. Dont know if i have ever seen a shade 6, have to check the welding supply. Most of my welding is with 1/8 rods so I could probably get by with a shade 9. I saw a chart somewhere that gives recommendations for proper shade for a given rod size and amperage.

Found this on the lincoln site. Welding Helmets and Eye Protection and a similar one is also on the miller site
