They can aslo be used (very carefully) to breakup to remove old sidewalks.

I have a combo unit (from Northern). It is now set up as a middle buster and if/when I change it to a subsoiler I will have to replace the plow bolts which hold the blade to the shaft. They rusted in place within a few weeks of the first time I used the middle buster. I should have applied a thick layer of anti-sieze (or some type of heavy grease) when I assembled it.

Alan,

Thinks are the same all over. I hope your wife didn't catch you. Mine's asleep.

What would be the minimum tractor horsepower required to effectively use either of these units, to ultimately get 12"-14" deep?

It has been my experience that HP is not an issue. I have seen 18hp Yanmars do just fine with a middle buster. I use a 25hp zetor with one. What matters is the amount of traction. You may have to weight the tractor down to keep it from spinning. My neighbor with the yanmar had to fill his tires with CaCl to get the traction thru his hard ground. I have weights and antifreeze in mine.
