Having trouble with fuel it seems. I believe the lifter pump is out, but was running fine without it, once the engine started. Now my injector pump is making a tapping sound. The only thing I can relate it to is the sound of a rod knocking in a gas engine.

It idles fine, but as soon as I try to move forward or back it acts as if it's starving for fuel and will put...put...putt gradually getting back to idle speed if I sit back in neutral.

I cracked the line at the high pressure side of injector pump and it seems decent, but I never really looked at it before hand. Taking the fuel filter out reveals only a small steady drip of diesel...even when key is in run position.

Could the injector pump be going out due to the lift pump not helping it?

Thanks for taking the time to read.

G'day Abel i don't know your model but you should have more than a drip out of the fuel filter are you sure you do not have a block between there and the fuel tank? Does your lift pump have a screw or bolt in the middle of the top cap it may have a screen in it that needs cleaning just undo and lift the top and the screen is right there. Most massey's running perkins also have a screen filter on the top side of the fuel tap inside the tank this may be blocked.

You need a very good flow of fuel coming out of that pump. Check the feed line from the tank for blockage first. Is the electric pump good & loud? That thing should shoot fuel pretty good. The koncking is your injector pump starvig for fuel, DO NOT run it that way. You will get an education on putting an injection pump in. Check the line coming from the tank for blockage first, then work to the electric pump.

I am 99.9% sure that the lift pump is out. It used to be God awful loud when you turned the key to the on position. Now I have zero noise. I'm waiting on the shop manual that I ordered to come in...then I'll have a better idea of where everything is.

For me, it's a shot in the dark as how to change some things. The manual will be invaluable. I also ordered the parts catalog as there seems to be next to zero clear parts info on the web for the 471.

I'm pretty sure the lifter pump has been out for a while, hasn't been any noise from it for a few weeks...or since it sat for so long while dealing with the spool valve issue. It ran fine without it, but took a long time to start cold. I just hope I didn't do any more damage through my ignorance of the issue.

Thanks for your replies, I'm very new to diesel engines and don't like to assume anything. You guys made me feel a little better about what I was thinking. I didn't know if I was on the right track. Another thing I'm not sure about is the fuel cut off solenoid. Would that cut off the lift pump and not the injector pump? I'll be able to check it out as soon as I figure out where it is.

Thanks for reading

You can go to our web site, at the lower right hand corner of the home page is an area where you can log in as a guest, and you can go to the Massey Parts Book and look up parts for any MF tractor, exploded views are there also. I hope this will help.

That helps, thank you. I'll order the lift pump and sending unit next week. Wish my local dealer would have mentioned something about that.

Ok, I'm on track. Ordered the lift pump and fuel sending unit...and while I've got the 3,213,171 bolts out of the hood  , I'll change the temp sending unit.

Are there any pointers for changing the sending units and lift pump? The actual changing of them are not described in the shop manual, only testing the lift pump.

Hope weather and shipping time cooperate so I can dive in this week-end. I have hope the 3/4 ton will pull the 471 out of the mud hole it sits in.

P.S. The MF parts guy sounded really surprised that I already had the part numbers...go figure.

I know this is a old thread, but do any know with the part number for the lift pump is on the 471 massey? Mine will run for a while and then it will just cut off like it is starving for fuel. Also my tach will work when it wants too. lokking for a wiring diagram if anyone has one. Thanks
