MF40 industrial
Hi from the UK.
Having a bit of a problem over here trying to discover the right part number(s) for replacement Steering Cylinders for my 1971 MF40 2205 (shuttle gearbox version). There seems to be a lot of conflicting information online so thought somebody might be able to shed some light for me?? Thanks in advance for any responses :)

I am not 100% sure that the US and UK Massey 40 Industrials are the same. However if it has the two cylinder full hydro steering then the right cylinder is # 519283M91 and the left is 519284M91. They can be opened up with a pin spanner and you could reseal it then. Much less expensive than a new cylinder. In the US we have access to a public version of agco parts books, however it is geofenced so you cannot get in from the UK.

Thank you for that info. I had kind of thought those were the numbers but been confused by what I was seeing on the machine. The cylinders on there cannot be opened or repaired in any way, and they don't seem to be the right spec on open/shut lengths either. I'm thinking they've been replaced with 'something that's easily and cheaply available' in the UK.

Lucky for you guys having open access to parts info. Also looks like there are waaaay more old tractors around in US, plus the parts to keep them going. So I'm slightly jealous....

If you have the cylinders listed above they do come apart. You will need to clean the gland off (part the rod moves through) and there are 4 holes in it. To open it you will need something like a OTC 7463 spanner. MF did not put welded cylinders on the 40 in the US.

Thanks for that. Yes - I'm discovering there are a few differences between US and UK spec cylinders. The original UK cylinders were repairable but apparently they were replaced with welded versions as the OEM parts ran out. Also the spec on replacement US-sourced cylinders is different to UK-sourced (15.5" compressed, 23" extended against 11" compressed, 18" extended). I guess US yards are smaller so your machines need a tighter turning circle!

On the plus side, I have now found a pair of cylinders over here. They are welded (I think) but also quite affordable. They look exactly like the pair coming off the machine so I'm guessing this isn't the first time they've been replaced - which I suppose isn't too bad in 50 years of service. The guy at the shop was was an old-timer with 40+ years experience working on MF40s so I'm hoping he knows what I need.........

For reference, they came from a UK outfit called Agri & Garden, their part numbers were AGSB1720 and AGSB1721 (one left, one right - not sure which way round) and they cost 」108 each plus VAT and shipping.

Thanks for responses
