MF hydrostatic drive question

I am looking at a 1974 MF40 TLB with hydrostatic drive. This tractor would be used on some fairly steep grades. I have used more recent hydrostatic drive tractors (e.g. Terramite; Allmand) and found that they self-brake quite well, even on steep grades, greatly reducing the risk of a runaway situation. My question is whether the hydrostatic drive in the MF40 would share this characteristic, or whether there are differences that would negate this advantage. Thanks in advance for your help.

I doubt the MF 40 has a hydrostatic transmission most of the older backhoes had a gear or shuttle set up. Are you sure yours has a hydrostatic transmission or does it have a torque converter? If it has a torque converter it won't brake like a hydrostatic will.

Be careful at any rate, I have been on some scary slopes with my 110tlb and have been grateful to have a 4x4 hydro with front and rear transmission controls. Makes quite a bit of difference in operation and safety.
