mf 245 smokes at idle

I just got a mf 245 . It smokes when started and at idle until i get rpms up a little and the further the rpms go , the less the smoke. Engine sounds good and strong. It is whitish in color and j as a diesel smell to it. Also, the air filter has what looks like carbon deposits on it and oil or fuel on it. Would anyone have any ideas whatvi should start looking at? I dont really want to use it if something is very wrong. Thanks.

How many hours on it? A lot of problem comes from very light use of the tractor, they are made to work hard.

Try disconnection the "thermoSTART" that's in the intake manifold.. they go bad & drip fuel into the intake & smoke like a freight train..
Just unscrew it from the manifold & see how it acts.. it doesn't cost a thing to check it..
MF are known to "load up"/slobber if not ran HARD once in a while.. the rings get carboned up & oil will start to come out/drip out of the exhaust..

How many rpm's do you consider idle, and what rpm's does it stop?

When it is as far down on the throttle as it goes is idling to me. And about 1/4 of the way up. Sorry, the tac on tractor doesnt work.

I have always considered normal/safe idle for an older diesel at 900-1000 rpm's. Most will go lower than that. Most smoke when not at normal idle speed. White smoke can indicate unburned fuel. Could be you have no problem?

Yes its possible.. and I think your correct.. I don't think it has 1.. sorry for the confusion..

Oh, no problem Pumpguysc. I appreciate your response. I was told the tractor sit for about a year before I bought it, so I think I will change the filters, fluids and try to fix the tachometer so I can know the rpms. If it isn't supposed to idle below 900 to 1000 rpms, maybe that is it. The rpms are really low at the lowest on the throttle. I will post back with what I find out. Thank you all.

I set them on the test stand at 600 rpms for low idle..

Ids the thermostat working? Perkins diesels have a reputation for smoking when cold. My tractor with a 3-152 Perkins smokes noticeably less when I use power service additive in the fuel.
