MF 231 PTO gear question

Hello all. First post. I have a Massey 231 and the PTO lever broke. After I took off the side cover, I see that the ground speed pto gear is just floating on the shaft. I’m not understanding how it stays put. I can put it back in place but it is a loose fit. The engine pto at the bottom moves freely on the splines. Does the upper pto gear need a retainer? I felt around in the oil and don’t find anything. Thanks!

I can't find the parts page that shows this. That said, I would guess a snap ring and washer holds it in place, but at this point, you will have to replace the gear and shaft.

Replace the gear and the shaft? Major project. And for what? A ground PTO feature that's (probably) never been used, and chances are never will be. I'd be looking for a short section of pipe, the I.D. of which will closely match the O.D. of the messed up portion of the shaft. Slice it length wise, place it around the shaft so it butts up against the gear and install a couple of hose clamps to keep it in place. Put the shifter / side cover back on and get back to work.

thanks for the diagram. Im not going to use the ground gear so just keeping it out of the way will be a good solution.

This seems like the most logical. Thank you for the advice and the reply’s on the other forum. I just want the gear out of the way since it will never be used. Going to my scrap pile now looking for some pipe.

I had a 1998 Massey Ferguson 231 for 17 years. It was the best tractor I ever owned.
I never had this problem. I’m curious as to how this happened.
