MF 1431 Engine shuts down

My 1431 dies when I shift it into gear. It's as if a safety feature was activated as shifting it quickly back to neutral will keep it running if I do it quickly enough. The manual says the pto switch must be in the off position or the engine will shut off when engaging the transmission, but as it is a depress and twist type switch, I don't see how it can be anything but off. Any ideas?

Could be seat switch but more likely the harness going to the seat switch is pinched and has a short. I would check that first.
