Water will splash onto the siding. Debris will cover the gravel over the French drain. Unless the French drain has an outlet and is pitched correctly, the water will concentrate around the building.
The other approach is to capture the water flowing off the roof into a gutter and then send it in a controlled fashion to a drainage area where it isn't expected to be a problem. But you have to keep the gutter and the drain free of debris for it to function properly.
