Mattress shopping

I'm in the market for a new king size mattress and was curious if anyone has any experience with the "Select Comfort" type that the bionic woman plugs on TV. Any info appreciated.

A few year(s) ago there was a thread on TBN about those types of mattresses. Might want to search for the thread because it was quite long and informative.

We got a Dormia foam mattress a few years ago when our Bone Cracker recommended them. Its very comfortable and its quiet. No noise when you roll over or get out of bed like the coil spring mattresses. Its is very heavy and bulky though. Would hate to have to move the thing. It came rolled up with the air compressed out of it. Take off the plastic and the foam filled with air. Air can be heavy.

John, I suspect this thread is what Dan was talking about. Cowboydoc and his wife had one of the Select Comfort beds and we bought ours in August, 2002, so it isn't quite 6 years old yet. We've actually moved 3 times since buying ours; had to move back into town in an apartment temporarily, then bought a mobile home temporarily, and then bought this house. It's exactly the opposite of what Dan said about his mattress. It's very light, easy to let the air out, disassemble, fold or roll up to move, and easy to set back up. They seem a bit expensive to me, but if anything should happen to it, I probably wouldn't even consider anything else; by the far the best mattress we've ever slept on. We bought their "foundation", too, which you might not need, but I like. We had a piece of that foundation break and when I called to get just the one piece, the lady said she'd send the whole frame (at no cost, of course); that while they looked alike, the new one was a better and stronger material, and I guess she was right because that's the only problem we've had with it.

Good luck with your decision.. Buying mattresses is a hit or miss gamble.. Laying on one for 10 min in the store doesnt even start to give you an idea of the real comfort..

My new neighbor was telling us about the a latex mattress he swore by- something like sleep easy.. We have only purchased the inner spring/coil type in the past and we arent that happy with it.. he said the latex isnt hot and will never wear out.. One brand came with three different firmnesses of layings that made up the mattress - that way you can swap it around between soft/med/hard and put what you want on top..

You've sure got that right. When we bought the select comfort mattress, I had been having a lot of back trouble; got up every morning with a backache and had trouble getting around for a few minutes. Now I thought that I liked an extra firm mattress so I started out on a sleep number of 75 and my back trouble disappeared immediately. My wife thought she liked a softer mattress so she started at about 35. That was OK for a couple of years, then I started having a little back trouble again and lowered my side to 55 and have stayed with that for at least a couple of years now. And I think my wife has raised her side to 75. I guess that's another of the big advantages of the select comfort. If one setting doesn't suit you, change it. You're bound to find one that's right for you.

However, I don't own any stock in the company, so to each his own.

My wife has one brother, and his wife, who have a tempurpedic mattress and they like it. Another of her brothers bought one, hated it, and sent it back. So personal preference is important.

We have had a select comfort for quite a few years now (12?). A few years ago, we bought one of the thermal foam mattress pads for on top of it - ours basically had no padding). It is a great combination. Love the bed.

Ken, I guess everything is always changing. At the time we bought ours, we got the model 5000 which was the top of the line. They only had the 3000, 4000, and 5000, but now they have a 6000, 7000, and 9000. I think the pillow top (which we got) was an option. And of course at the time, we lived way out in the boondocks between a couple of very small towns, so I did some shopping on the Internet, then ordered the bed via telephone, and it was delivered by UPS. I didn't know they even had retail stores (if they did have them then), but now I know where there are at least a couple of retail stores fairly near us.

We went with an inexpensive model but with two adjustable mattresses. i do really like the thermal foam top on it - that 2" of thermal foam makes if go from a very good bed to a great bed. The pillow top options might as well. The foam also eliminated feeling where the two mattresses butted up against each other. Within about 2 years of our buying ours, the price doubled. Our blower did die during warranty and they replaced our hardwired one with a unit that had remote controls. That has lasted a long time now.

10-4 on the mattress confusion. I also checked out one of the latex type, this one was Serta's top of the line foam with pencil sized holes through the whole thing. These holes are supposed to keep you cool along with the various materials comprising the pillow top. I also assumed the latex would be/get hot but was assured it won't. They are also quite pricey.
I like the idea of the air bladder on the "select" line of beds as I can now identify most every spring by name on my current mattress. I figure I can use the wireless remote to set my wife's half to a granite like consistency as she sleeps.
Bird, I see the different models of the "select" and was surprised at all the options. I, as well am leaning toward the model 5000. There is quite a price variance across their lineup.
Thanks for the link to the old thread, very helpful. There is a fair amount of mystery in the mattress game. I see different stores have different names for the same matresses. Add's to the confusion....

I see the wireless remote mentioned in a couple of threads and I'm sure they work well, but we have the wired remotes. I guess they're still about the same, but when we bought ours, it was the same price for one wireless that could work either side of the bed, or the two hard wired; one for each side. I figured (1) the wireless might be hard to find sometime, and (2) the wireless would eventually need a new battery. Anyway, my wife and I each have our own control on the nightstand on each one's side of the bed. Of course we may not use one for months at a time since we don't often change the settings. But we've had no problems with them so far. Incidentally, we also have the Queen size rather than the King size.

Gracious. I can believe that thread was six years ago... Seem like just last year....

I HATE shopping for a mattress since you just don't know if it will work until you have bought it.

We considered the Select Comfort but seems like it was more money they we could spend. Then the Bone Crackers mentioned Dormia which we eventually bought. My back feels much better on the Dormia than the old mattress without a doubt.

We don't find that the foam mattress makes you hot.

I can sure understand that. Ours was more than double the cost of any mattress we had bought before. Our youngest daughter and her husband asked about the select comfort mattresses a couple of months ago and decided they were too expensive. So they thought they found a bargain on a name brand conventional mattress, and after 2 months, told my wife they were wishing they'd gone ahead with the select comfort.

Of course when I was younger, I could sleep just fine on the ground; didn't need a mattress. But no more.

I got one of those mattresses that the sheep sell. I bought it at Sams Club. After about a year I thought it was crummy and sunk a lot. Stopped by Sams and they would have refunded the whole price if I had sales slip. Couldn't find the slipo and they wouldn't make a copy. They claimed they would not be able to find sale unless I knew the exact time and day I bought it. Now, about 2 1/2 years later, every time I see those sheep I wonder if I should have lamb chops for dinner.

If the kids got the mattress at one of those big stores, maybe it's not too late for full refund?

Wireless was not an option when we bought ours. And we were lucky. The price of our full sized bed nearly doubled a year or so later. We would never have bought it and would not have realized that it was worth the money. At the time, we had a tiny spiral staircase. Bringing our conventional mattress up that was an extreme pain. Obviously, the select was very easy.

My brother bought a different style air mattress which has valves to let air in or out. It was quite expensive but he likes it.

And yes, i was quit surprised to find that the thermal foam was not hot to sleep on.
