Massey Ferguson 321

I had to replace the sheer coupler in the transmission. That was a pretty easy job, but when I put everything back together, the hydraulic lift is stuck in a position. What did I do wrong and how do I fix it?

Assuming you removed the lift housing to do this? Did you follow any service manual instructions or simply unbolt and lift the housing off? My thoughts go straight to the lift pump control valve roller, but without more details, there could be other things as well.

It’s a 231. I don’t have a manual. I just unbolted and lifted. The first time I reassembled I had no hydraulics at all and then I checked and the arm was not behind the control valve roller. I made sure it was behind the control valve roller the second time and that time when I reassembled and turned the tractor on the lift arms raised, but would not go down.

So the roller was till intact after the first try? On some models raising the cover without first removing the roller will tear some of the linkage apart, damaging or even ruining the control valve itself. You got lucky there.

Now you need to remove the right side cover and see what's happening in regard to the roller and the vertical links as you move the control levers (draft and position control) back and forth through the ranges. The control valve is internally spring loaded to the raise position. The levers and the lift arms act against it to either stop or lower the arms depending on where the levers and/or the lift arms are positioned. Obviously something in that mix is not working as it should.
