We purchased a 6180 a few years back and recently we have had bother starting it....Turn the key and nothing happens and only way to get her going is to connect the two points on the starter motor with something metal...Any ideas

Bad ground?

G'day could be a bad ground but it could also be one of the safety switches check the pto is not on, the fwd/rev shuttle lever ( if fitted ) is locking into nuetral, and also check the clutch switch they are about the only interlocks i can think of at the moment. Don't be too hard on yourself if the pto is in i recently drove 450km round trip to a combine harvester with a set of new batteries and starter as the new owner and cutomer of ours rang up complaining that he could not start ( threatening to charge us for downtime), as the machine was new to him i asked if he had everything turned off and in nuetral he swore it was. I get there at about 930 pm and get in it to check what is happening the first thing i do is put the hydrostat into nuetral and turn the key........ what do you know it fired right up, he very :ashamed: but he going to feel worse when he gets my bill:laughing:.

Very common this not having everything in Neutral or off position bug is.

You're generally no good when the call comes in, machines junk, of course the operator checked everything. Nothing like that feeling of satisfaction when it fires right up, much to the operators's surprise.

Yup, that's why we get the big bucks.

This recently happened to me for my 4253. It turned out to be a wire that plugged into the tranny area, that had somehow disconnected. I'm assuming it was the clutch safety wire.

when you cycle the clutch pedal does it wake the transmission controller up?

G'day when you say you short the two metal parts on the starter are you talking about the two large terminals or one large one small? If you short from the top large lug to the push on terminal and it starts then your starter is ok if not pull the starter and have o/hauled. If it starts then check at the firewall above the starter and you should have a couple of big elec junctions there, pull them apart and clean the terminals and inspect the wiring at the back of the plug, I have had some corrode there and give some hassles
