Massey 135 - Operating Temperature

Hi all, I have a '69 massey 135 with the AD3.152 perkins on board and i've been having trouble getting it up to operating temperature.

Eg. Ambient temperature is 10-15 deg.c, radiator 80% blocked with cardboard. After running a slasher around for half hour or so I stuck a temp probe in
Oil = 80 DegC.
Coolant = 70 DegC

I did put a new thermostat in it, but this thing just wants to run cool! If I take the cardboard off the radiator the bottom hose is basically stone cold.
I can hold my hand on the bottom of the sump without burning as well.

All this points me back at doing the thermostat again..... or is this just normal?

Is this a Perkins diesel? Are you just running around with the slasher spinning or are you actually cutting with it. Diesels need to be worked to get to temperature. Unlike spark ignitions engines which run with almost constant peak temperature levels, diesels run with widely varying fuel air ratios and no intake throttling so the peak temperature vary greatly. they take a long time to warm up at idle conditions.
How confident are you that your temperature probe is reading correctly? You can calibrate it very easily if you are near sea level using boiling water. Bring water to a rolling boil and place the probe in the boiling water. It should read 100C

Jerry/MT, I have a sneaking feeling that this bloke lives here in Wynyard, Tasmania. If so, then yes it's haying season down here and he'd have been actually cutting... a bit early but Wynyard is in the NW of the State whereas I'm in the NE and different regions start at different times.

He should be close to sea-level, unless he gave Wynyard as a 'close enough' location.

Oh, and the AD3.152 Perkins is the diesel.
