A lot of electrical engineering science was needed to create the hardware. Science is all around us. It is what makes us an advanced society. Medical treatments, agricultural science, fluid and chemical sciences, earth and life sciences. We would be living like the 1850s without science professionals.

And we’re headin back to the 1850’s with this current crop of environmental “scientists”.

Education is nice but if you send an idiot to school and that person
gets educated and becomes a graduated student you then have an
educated idiot and the problem seems to be they end up in congress

Our science classes in High School consisted of talking about a base
ball or football game because the teacher was a coach. The only
classes that were real was typing, book keeping and accounting and
the english class the first day was we had a new teacher fresh from
collage introducing her and the 2nd day we had new english books
and we were to read this poem it was about taking little kids under
one year old to the butcher shop as they are good to eat I slammed
my book shut tossed the book on the teachers desk and said I ain't
no cannibal I don't need to learn this crap and went to the back of the
class and worked on my accounting and passed the english class!
That's why I believe that a coach should only teach sports no classes
like math or any subject where yo;u can learn something good.
The High School 25 years later teach: bow & arrow, skiing, tennis,
soccer, football, baseball, ping pong, racket ball, table tennis basket
ball, bat mitten, horse shoes, swimming is there any wonder why kids
in school today don't know very much????

Of course. What other group would be more trustworthy? The ones into themselves?
I don’t care if a scientist has an ego, or is a bad dude, I care if he can help improve our lives.

Policy is more important than mean tweets. ;)

We had a now retired Doctor with zero bedside manner but patients would fly in for complex eye procedures because he was the best…

Most were fully willing to overlook anything for the best outcome…

Thirty plus years and you see a lot…

I went to HS in a tiny town in west texas. Those were absolutely great years. Like you say, all the male teachers were coaches first and taught science/math a distant second and without much interest. BTW, we only had football, basketall, track, and baseball. Would have loved to have had those other sports too.

That used to bother me, but now I think it works out well. School is more about being social and for spending time with friends. Sports do that a lot better than classrooms and homework.
Truth is, that kids who are inclined toward science are going to find a way to learn, and probably learn more by being curious and reading outside the classroom anway. Nobody expects coaches to be the best science/math teachers, there just is not enough time.

I now think that serious science and math study doesn't happen until after high school anyway.
Both social & science/math learning have their place, it doesn't have to be the same place.
