Man ...that e-filing is fast

I did the income taxes last weekend. We got refunds....the federal came in 8 days and the state in 9. That's pretty fast for government work.

About the same time for us,but I got feeling goverment and state new/raise taxs refund be gone before we realize it.

I e-filed first time in 98 - the second time I did taxes in USA. Would not have itr any other way, just way too convinient.

You did better than me, I e-filed my taxes back on Feb 20th and am still waiting for my refund. I just checked today and they said I should have it by the 16th of March. I want my money back.

Does it still cost money to e-file? I've always just used the old fashioned paper/mailing method because I didn't want to have to buy a tax program and pay to file it.

Has that changed in recent years? It seems like e-filing would be better all around - I'm just too cheap!

I used on line TaxAct ($18) again because it was convenient to have it pull appropriate forms from last year, for this year's taxes. That includes state and federal electronic filing. If you make less than a certain amount ($30,000?) you can file for free with some tax programs. I use this program to do inlaws' taxes.

That's a sore point with me too ..the fee to pay your taxes that is. Our situation is complicated enough to make me think I should use an application.

I used TurboTax for both state and federal and with a credit union discount offer it was $79. for both. In NJ you can do a state tax return online and have the refund e-deposited to your bank account. I don't think the feds have come around to offering an online tax return yet. I won't go into why I think that's the case though..

Rumor has it that the feds have a simple 1-page form. Unfortunately, you have to fill out a 12 page application and get 16 signature approvals before you can use the "simple" form.

Mine was 8 days, also. I got everything together that I needed earlier this year than ever before I think. So I filed the evening of 1/24/10 and my refund (direct deposit) was in my checking account by 9 a.m. on 2/1/10.

I've been using TurboTax so long I'm not even sure when I started, but I know at least since 1997. My credit union offers it online, but I still buy the program on a CD every year. We used to have to pay to file electronically, then send in a rebate form and get it back in a couple of months, but this time the filing was just "free" to start with, if you could call it free, since I paid $41.76 plus tax (total$45.10) for it at Sam's Club. But at least we don't have a state income tax.:thumbsup:

I love using the efile. Got the federal in no time at all. However, the state is another story. Our current governer in NYS decided that he wants to HOLD the state refunds due to lack of cash flow. I filed my taxes just one week before they announced the holding of our state tax refunds.

If they DON'T mail my refund by june, I believe they will have to add interest to my refund. :thumbsup: However, whats the point of efile if they gonna hold onto it. Waiting for a State Tax Refund? Don't Hold Your Breath | NBC New York

That's exactly why I used the 'free' Turbotax federal e-file and printed and filed a paper copy with NY. I do the same when I get a fed refund and owe a small balance to the state, which seems to be my usual situation other than 2009. Nothing in my applicable tax codes dictates that I use the same filing methods for Fed & State taxes.

Have not got my refund yet. It only been 6 days. Direct deposit for Federal and State. We use TurboTax online. Makes it easy to use if you have a half way decent connection.
