So just finished fencing in the field behind our barn. Over the past 11 years since we built the barn, we have seen every year, black bears using the field to eat and also go from our creek on the East side of our property to a creek that is to the West on the neighbors 200 acres. So to try and give them an easy way around the fence, rather than through it, I have roughed out a road with the tractor that they can use. Time will tell if it works, sure hate to see the new fence squashed by a black bear. Think it was 3 years ago we saw bears back there about 20-25 times during the year, never mind how many when we weren't looking.

British Columbia has the largest Black Bear population in North America and Vancouver Island has the densest population of bears in the entire province.
OPPS that's where I live.

Mouse -

Love all the pics you're posting. Making me longing for the PNW. I used to live/work in Port Angeles for 4 years, still have a house and property there. Absolutely fell in love with the area. Wanted to move back there but was overruled by U-no-hoo......

Only saw 1 bear in the 4 years I was there, that was driving down from Hurricane ridge. Never knew VI had such a big bear population.

Sure miss the smell of fresh cut cedar!!

Nice looking place there Mouse. I'd love to spend more time on the coast.

Are you going to put up signs so the bears know why you have done all this work  I think you should paint strips in the dirt so they know which lane to use, maybe even a "slow watch for humans" would be good

Thanks for the pictures, we had lots of bear activity this year but they kept hidden for the most part. I figure maybe because of all the logging going on close by, they may be a little more cautious then usual

Looks like it might have been easier to move the barn.

George, you need a 'bear crossing' sign, perhaps that way they'll know which way to go!

Love pics of Vancouver Island...I definitely would move there if I could find something!

Mousefield, have you considered putting up trail cams to see what comes along?

We see enough without recording it and know they could be out there at any time. We know there are lots of bears, mink, cougars and even wolf's in our area. We have seen all 4 on our land over the years. Our land has no neighbors on 3 sides so it's surrounded by thousands of acres of forested land. :)

That's pretty neat Mousefield. I guess you have to bring the dogs in at night? Or just leave them out the bark at what goes bump in the night?

The dog we have now is a lab that we got earlier this year and is 7 years old. She is a couch potato in the truest sense. Now the lab cross we had for over 10 years that we lost about a year and a half ago was great at barking and treed a few bears over the years. Took it pretty hard when we had to put her down, she was also a house dog. Wife thinks we should get a guardian livestock dog that lives outside, we'll see. :)
