Hay everyone, I'm new on here. I was wondering if it was possible to somehow modify the pump or the clutch to make my '06 have the faster speed and better power like I've heard the XUV has? I've done some research and found out I have the same motor in mine, but I'm not sure about the clutch. I've already put some money into this Gator (lots of accessories), so I don't want to trade it off. For what I use it for on the farm, I prefer the solid rear axle. But I hate the fact I have to smash the pedal to get it to take off. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I am in the same situation. I have the 06 HPX which is a good machine. I cannot find anyone who could help me with getting more speed other than a tire change and I don't want to do that. I even adjusted the bolt under the gas pedal so it would go down a little further, that did no good as the engine must already be set at the maximum governed speed. The pedal was harder to push with no advantage so I put it back where it was.

I took the easy way out and ordered a new XUV which should be ready next week. I too farm and use the gator for a lot of heavy work but I am hoping the independant rear suspension will hold up. It actually has a 100 pound heavier weight rating than the HPX. I also like the solid rear axel but that is why the thing rides so darn rough. You have to trade off the sold axel to get the ride. I hope I am not dissapointed. I will be the first one in my area to have an XUV so I don't know what people think about them yet.

Well we have a dealer close to us who has a bunch of new XUV's in. I know that the IRS would probably ride better. I'm hoping somone on here might be able to give me some insight on this matter. I just can't see trading off a perfectly good '06 Gator since it already has some of the improvements.

how far did you back the screw down under the gas pedal??? that will get a few mph.my 04 does 30mph withs 27"589's now you can mess with the govenor too but i haven't done that yet. i figure 30mph is good enough for this thing.

I bet you are getting your speed from the tires. When I backed off the screw under the gas pedal I had to press the pedal pretty hard to get it to go further down and there was no increase in engine speed. I put it back where it was so I wouldn't break anything. I turned the screw maybe 5 turns but that was enough to where the back side of the gas pedal would barely touch the bolt head when pressing hard.

Funkster, your last sentence (on your first post) makes me think you have a worn drive/clutch belt. I don't have any gators, but I am into snowmobiles, and those clutch belt drive systems are very similiar. When a belt gets worn on the sides(the taper of the belt gets thinner) then during initial belt engagement (from a dead stop at idle) those pulley sheaves have to squeeze closer together BEFORE it touchs/grips the thinner belt, this puts the belt "up" higher on the pulley sheaves and changes the gear ratio. It is like letting the clutch out on a manual transmission with it in 2nd or 3rd gear from a dead stop verses 1st gear. You lose that mechanical advantage that makes the vehicle take off quickly from a dead stop. Again, on snowmobiles with a new belt on, engine off, you should only have about .020" side clearance between the belt side(taper) and the pulley sheave on the engine primary clutch. I doubt any factory clutch is set this tight, this spec is a high performance setting. Another big factor is the distance between the engine primary clutch/pulley and the transmission secondary pulley. I assume John Deere has slots for the engine mounts to adjust this. Basically, at idle, you want the belt as tight as possible BUT not so tight that the vehicle creeps forward by itself at an idle due to friction at the center shaft of the front primary clutch. This may be too involved for what you want, but I would sure try a new belt(cheap and easy on snowmobiles) as a first step. I have cured peoples snowmobile "LOW POWER" complaints just by telling them to install a new(correct size) drive belt.

The XUV is supposed to have a tighter belt than the HPX, that is one of the reasons the take off speed is supposed to be greatly improved. They also have some type of automatic adjustment on the XUV that work in conjuction with the electronic fuel injection that always will compensate for a worn belt. I read an article where JD claims there will be no speed loss for the servicable life of the belt because of the automatic compensation of the electonic fuel injection.

they both helped out in the speed the tires and the screw.. before i put the tire on i messed arount with the screw and i noticed a higher reving sound in the motor when running wide open in the field. did anyone do a weight comparieson between the hpx/xuv. with all the metal takin out of the rearend it should be lighter .

Tommy I think the reason he doesn't see an increase is because it is a diesel. I haven't heard of anyone being able to get more speed out of one that way like you can the gas ones.

Catman you are right about the belt system we have. It might be that but if it's still relatively low hours probably not. While they are fast you still don't get the tires to spin on the HPX like I hear you do on the XUV if you mash the gas.

I think you are SOL funkster... :(

Well, I've only got 13hrs on this and I've already taken a look at the belt. I've got 2 JD snowmobiles myself. So I guess my question is this; Are the clutches the same from the HPX to the XUV? If so, and you guys are saying that the belt is wider on the XUV, then installing the wider belt should help with the throttle response some. I may get on JD parts and check this out. I am considering installing the larger tires and rims on this to gain some ground clearance, but I know it will make it that much more doggish and that would defeat my purpose on the power issue. If I have leared one thing Darkday it is there's always a way, it's just whether or not it will be feasible. :D
