I went and test drove (?) a Mahindra 5500 4WD on Saturday... got a sneaky suspision this is the tractor I will wind up getting. I kinda crawled under it and looked it over real good... I notice that the forward drive unit where the wheel mounts doesn't appear to be completely sealed like the Kubota.. or did I not see stuff correctly /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif? If it is open.. will this be a high maintenance area??

No it will not be a problem!! It is just a different way of powering the front wheels. Most companies feel the open u-joint system is stronger, compared to the closed bevel-drive. Look around at other tractors, outside of the Asians and Belarus everyone else uses the open-knuckle drive for mfd axles. About the largest hp tractor you can find with the encloseed bevel drive is the Kubota M120 (even Belarus has changed systems on their larger tractors)whereas you'll find open-knuckle mfd axles up to 300 hp.

Thanks for the reply... I've still got a lot to learn about the mechanics or tractors.

Even on JDs you can see the U joints on the 5000 series and up to the big ones!

one way to think about it is theirs less parts in the axle to break a plus i think! unless they have planatary hubs on front axle then i'm wrong. not that planatarys are bad. either way the diesign is not a problem. ive seen most set ups and not herd any major trouble with any
