The area will be new/reclaimed pasture. The area was timbered about 14 years ago so a lot of small trees mixed with large trees. I'm going to be leaving the 5"+ trees and clearing the small trees and brush.

I'm leaning toward getting a tree puller to lift the trees out of the ground. The. Follow behind with a forestry mulcher to clean up the downed trees. Then I'll follow up by tilling the mulch into the soil.

At least that's the plan for now.

Can anyone tell me what the going price is for the Mahindra 3550? Since I would be using this for raking hay I want to stay with a gear model. I am also thinking of a cab model for blowing snow in the future. Thanks.

I've been quoted at 28500 HST with FEL

Well, it builds out at over 47K. So probably someone is not on the same page as you are.

Cab shuttle $40,690
Loader $6,810
Block heater $358
Total list of $47,858

So if you are getting a cost of $28,500, I would be jumping on that.

My quote was not for a cab model but yes, it's a good price. Was quoted about the same price from 2 different dealers.

I've been researching tractors for weeks and I think I've narrowed my selection to these 2 tractors. The Mahindra 3550 and the Kubota MX5800, both HST 4WD.

I'm having a tough time deciding between these. I like them both...

Someone give me some feedback please.

Dealers:

The Kubota dealer is 25 min away
The Mahindra dealer is 45 min away
I have the 3550 - I looked at kubota briefly before deciding on the Mahindra.

Reasons I chose the Mahindra:
-Heavier overall. I use it primarily for loader work. I want the extra weight, and the extra strength that the weight provides.
-Front axle pivots captured top and bottom. Stronger than if they were just captured from underneath. Not sure what Kubota does on this particular model. May not matter to you if you are not using the loader to full capability.
-Larger tires, especially in front, compared to the competition.
-No DPF, and no regen for Tier IV emissions
-The loader is stronger than the competition, including the MX5800.

Reasons you may want the Kubota
-Lighter weight will be easier to transport if that is an issue for you.
-Higher horsepower will be a bit better if doing mowing or hay work. I find the Mahindra does pretty well with a 6 foot bushhog, but more power is never a bad thing.

Drive them both, and see what you think. The Mahindra HST can "chatter" a bit when trying to inch forward. The use of low range mitigates this for the most part - but you may/may not find it annoying. On the flip side, the 3550 loader joystick looks like it's more ergonomic than the kubota. I also prefer the twin touch pedal vs a rocker pedal for HST - but some people prefer the opposite. Try them both out and see if there's anything that's better or worse for you.

I'd also consider checking out the Mahindra 2555. I think that is a more comparable machine to the MX5800.

I'd also make sure you check out each dealer as far as warranty goes. Mahindra corporate can be a bit sluggish at times. A good dealer will be able to help tremendously if you have any issues.

If you have any specific questions on the 3550, let me know. I have about 500 hours on mine, it's about 2.5 years old.

What kind of Tree Puller are you talking about?
Sounds like maybe an Excavator with a thumb may be a good choice.
I am all about most anything but a Kubota recently with the way they treat their Dealers but they do have some great products and in some cases no one to compete against. So there are times that we have to buy from them but for me now its last case.
The machines questioned are pretty close to comparable so I would say go with the Dealer you feel best dealing with and go from there

I like the 3550 for all the same reasons you listed plus it's a premium tractor at a not so premium price.

One question I've not been able to find a good answer for is in regards to the HST throttle. Does the 3550 have a "linked pedal" throttle feature? Other manufacturers call the feature "auto throttle" where you can link the throttle to the direction pedal.

It does not. I use the hand throttle to set the engine speed.

Good luck with your choice.I for one do not like bull-dozers for clearing;all you end up with is big piles of dirt and brush. They also remove the top layer of soil;not a good thing in my experience.Either one of those tractors with a grapple and box blade capable.
I like Kubota's myself;we have three;you can always add weight if needed.
