Folks,
New tractor buyer here and I have a couple options that are in my price range and HP range. Please give me some advice.

Yanmar(reconditioned) 31hp 4x4 with loader vs. New Mahindra 2816 (28hp)
4x4 with loader

There is about a $4000 dollar difference with the Yanmar being the cheapest. However it is a reconditioned tractor but its from a reputable dealer.

Then mahindra is new and comes with 5yr warranty

Is the Mahindra as strong as the Yanmar or stronger? My main use will be bushhogging and using harrows? I want to pull the heaviest harrows I can?

HELP!!!

I would look at the specs of both tractors, (weight, loader capacity, etc.) compare and test drive them.....that should help you determine.

Reconditioned means its made to look good to sale. Many times its just new seal, paint job, new steering wheel and gauges, and maybe a new seat.

Get the new one. If you want to pull hard get R1's and look at what the machine weighs.

No question...for only $4000 difference get the new Mahindra. It gives you a reputable manufacturer, warranty, nationwide parts & service, and known quality. You don't know what you're getting in a "reconditioned" gray market machine, though Yanmar is the pick of the gray market litter. A lot of people get good gray market tractors, and a lot of people get burned by "reconditioned" gray market tractors that have just been steam cleaned, repainted, and patched up enough to run around the dealer's lot without breaking anything. IMO gray market tractors just aren't worth the gamble unless the deal is ~ 50% of the price of a comparable new tractor from a quality manufacturer. Even then I'd think really hard before I bought a gray market tractor over even a well used machine from a mainstream manufacturer.

Which Yanmar model?
Most Yanmars you find here in the U.S. are grey market tractors and some of these imports have come right out of the rice fields. My neighbor has a Yanmar and it doesn't strike me as a particularly strong machine.

I'd go with the new Mahindra with its 5 year warranty. I own a 2008 Mahindra 5525 and it's a heavy, strong beast of a tractor. Simple, easy to work on.

I've had/have both and go with the Mahindra or look at Kioti as well.

for pulling a harrow, you need to consider the weights of the 2 machines. Some of the newer machines have more horsepower, but lack the weight to get that power to the ground. Also, the grey Yanmars generally have great parts availability. Not sure what model your looking at exactly, but some of the new machines lack support for parts after a relatively short period of time.

Andy, Not with what he is considering. I believe Mahindra's are one of the heaviest tractor you can look at within a specific HP range. I agree that HP means nothing if you just spin but if you look and compare the specs of a Mahindra to a Yanmar I think you will be surprised.

Mahindras have great support. Don't think I'm bashing Yanmar because I'm not. I had one and they do what they are supposed too. Most of them are reconditioned tractors that were not originally sold in the US and did not have the safety equipment on them standard. Some dealers retrofit them with ROPS etc...

Correct me if I'm wrong.

I purposely didn't make a recommendation of which tractor to choose because I've never seen or driven a Mahindra, or a Yanmar of that size for that matter. :) I know if it was me and my primary work was going to be pulling, I'd want something heavy and with good parts support. Sounds like some previous posters think the Mahindra is a good machine with good support, and that would make it a pretty easy choice for me...go with the Mahindra, if only for the warranty.

If I had it to do all over again I MIGHT have gone with a Kioti only because of dealer support. Seems my local Mahindra dealer might be on the way out ;)
