Tractor
ford 8n
First of all, I am new to the forum posting but been a lurker for a number of years. I am a hunter and will be upgrading my tractor this year from a 1950 ford 8n to something new for food plots and I will be utilizing a disc, rototiller and light bucket work around my 60 acre hunting property. I am looking for some advice on the three models I have narrowed down too. Two are left overs with good pricing and also a used 2016 from a local person.

New left over

John Deere 3032e
18,999 plus sales tax of 8%

0% for 72 months

PRO: Cheap with the 0% factored in, love lay out, dealer around 30 minutes and a very reputable one.
Con: light for compact tractor, 2200lbs, not quick detach bucket and loader, only JD attachments for loader ( I believe), uses alumunim cast for rear end

Massey 1734E

18,000 at 5.75% for 72 months + Sales tax of 8%

Pros: heaver, 2600 lbs, loader tires at no extra cost, quick detach bucket and loader, Cast iron, good dealer and expanding (30 minutes too) they also offer free transportation for warranty work and discounted transportation if purchased from them. 15% off
Cons: roughly 2k more with financing factored in over 7 years. don't like the hydro peddles,

USED

New Holland workmaster 37

person is moving and needs to get rid of it by end of June, only has 110 hours

16k no sales tax

Pros
heaviest tractor of all, largest engine, largest lift capabilities for bucket and 3 point, quick detach bucket and loader, it does look close to brand new and does not look beat up.

Cons:
Good dealer but I have heard they are super expensive, its a private sale so no guarantees, I would get transferable warranty of 3 years on power train but that's it.

I would have to write the check and I like the financing to keep my money working hard for me :)

what's everybody's thoughts!

I am leaning towards writing the check for the larger tractor and being done with it.

I'm with you, I would write the check and be done with it.. I would never pay interest on a tractor nor would I pay sales tax when I could save money buying the near new 37, no tax, no interest and no worry about payments.. JMO..

Would have to debate between the Massey and NH but the Deere wouldn’t even be on my list!
Aluminum rear? Not something I could ever get comfortable with!

Since the MF and NH have the same engine (Shibaura  1.5L-T) I'd go for the NH without hesitation. I doubt yoou'd put too much wear on any them in a handful of seasons of plot work, say half or so of your 60 acres/year. :) That said, IMO you would have no excess of hp for serious tilling (5') or disk work (7'), or for turning a 6' slasher.

btw, with 3PH and/or PTO work in mind, I too would not consider a Deere E-series for lack of an iron housing. Oh, and I'd trade 5 hp for 500 lbs of weight on my past (1) & present (2) Shibaura CUTs.

I've seen a few dealers quote out different prices for cash, 0%, and fix rate around 5% for financing. Do they normally have some clause regarding interest accrual. I think the first tractor I had quoted to me months ago was a Massey 1735M with blower and backhoe and the price at 0% was around 59k and at 5% or so was down to almost 51k which was ridiculous - the monthly payment in that setup would have been less for the 5% rate and I would assume you could pay it off early and avoid a larger chunk of interest? The 0% rate from Massey just made no sense to me at all. The cash price quoted was the same as the 5% rate as well. If you can get a return higher than the interest it would still make sense though.

Any dealer that charges more for a cash deal is one to stay away from.. Anytime I have bought and paid cash for anything including several tractors I saved money.. Never encountered what you describe..

I'm not confused by that. 0% financing isn't exactly a 'cash price', and in my case was 8.5% more than 'real' cash price I paid with 1/2 down & a 3% loan from my CU. btw, I wouldn't buy a house, car, or boat by financing the whole thing. Want to pay less interest? Borrow less.

"0%" financing" is usually just a BIG hook. It commits a buyer to prepaying interest on the bottom line, with no way to pay down early and reduce that cost. It's a seller's or lenders frosted doughnut with sprinkles, a long term deal with fixed interest return signed and sealed on day one. (What they're in business to do .. make profit, not do favors).

Sit on the machines and buy a tractor to use, not to brag about the deal or to ruin it w/o proper use & maintenance. Not all of us need a dealer in our pocket to operate machinery without breaking it, or a warranty to expire without mishap. Your dealer will always be somewhere down the road. Your tractoer will be under your butt every hour you work it. Rant over. btw, I still like the blue one .. and the deal. :)

Same here.. No matter how you look it, The 37 paying cash would be the route I would take. He would be saving a bunch or money on taxes, interest payments and have a bigger tractor..

Tend to agree, but there is some value in a warranty and also some value in a new machine in the depreication aspect. The used machine appears to be a better deal but doubtful its a world apart better deal.

Agreed 0% is nothing, on tractors they end up pulling rebates, so you end up making up for the interest in purchase price. 0% by and large is a scam.

Good deal! I think you'll like it! I have essentially the same tractor with LS written on the side of it. 2014 G3038. View attachment 605861

Awesome! I would have went and looked at an ls but the dealer was just to far away.. nice tractor!

I understand this when the price is different cash vs 0 but why does Deere do cash and finance the same price?
