Well I started off with a wimpy Harbor Freight 15' extendable pole. Worked ok for a month, then the locking collars quit holding. Ended up cracking after a bit, so I resorted to screw clamps. Put up with that for about a yr, unscrewing those clamps everytime I had to replace a flag, also HF.

So a couple months ago I got a bright idea. Had a nephew deliver, since he had a truck capable of hauling a 33ft pipe. Local pipe supply has tons of the oil field sucker pipe, 2-7/8" OD approx 3/16" wall. Nice pipe. Paid about $76 for the pipe so gave him a $100 bill for dropping it off for me.

I went to the local steel supply and there it got pricey. Picked up 2 sq plates, 10x10"x1/2" with 7/8" holes pre drilled in each corner, $49 each, ouch. I also bought a 4ft piece of 1/4" x 4" steel plate, and 4ft of 1" sched 80 tubing, and 3/4" steel rod.

First thing was to make a hinge using the tubing and 3/4" rod, and welded to the two steel plates. Pulling the rod (now the hinge pin) out, I welded one plate to the flag pole, which was a 25ft section of the main pipe. I then welded the other plate to a 4ft piece of the same pipe, making sure I alined the hinge in the direction I wanted the pole to lay down. The 4ft piece I placed in the ground in a 2.5ft diameter hole filled with concrete. Thats my base.

Then I used a horse shoe given to us by the same nephew and his wife as a house warming gift years earlier, to make my rope cleat. At the top I cut and reduced the OD of the pipe to 2.5" to match the pulley and cap diameter, and welded a 2.5 stub on to it, to mount the pulley cap.

On the opposite side I welded a U shaped piece of rebar about 5' below the top, amd about 5' off the bottom I welded an upside down L. Those hold the thin cord that I use to pull the cable up that I use to raise and lower the pole. That way I can do maintenance on the solar powered light and pulley on top. Here's a short video I made of the process.

My welding does not compare to most of the projects I see here, so don't judge me on that, lol.

Comments or questions here or on the video. Will try to answer both. Oh, when the video was made, I used the HF 3x5' flag. It now flys my Allegiance 4x6' USA made.

Hope you enjoy it. I did use my tractor to move the pole around and raise it.

Nice job on the pole.
About 25 years ago I had a local Amish fab shop make me a 20' aluminum flag pole out of 3" .25" wall tube. The base is similar to yours, except the pole mounts with two 5/8" bolts between two plates. I can pull one 5/8" bolt and lay it down. Makes it easy to replace the eagle topper with a star in about 5 minutes at Christmas time.

Nicely done! Great weekend to publish the thread.

What did you paint your pole with?

I may have missed it, but how did you get your pull rope undone from the top once it was erect...and what do you use to lower it back down for maintenance?

Your well done YouTube video reminded me of a similar flag pole from Boy Scout camp 55 years ago. It was (2) concreted in pipes, sticking about 3 feet high out of the ground. They were separated by about 3 inches so the actual long flag pole fit between them. (So once erect it looked like 3 pipes next to each other side to side in a row, the flagpole was the center pipe.)

They were drilled with (2) holes about two feet apart for (2) big bolts fastened with nuts to go through all 3 poles,. The top bolt acted as the pivot, and the bottom bolt two feet lower was bolted in the hole once the flagpole was pulled erect.

It allowed the pole to be laid down for maintenance, pivoting on the top bolt.

If I recall, it didn't require any welding and was basically just the tall flag pole centered between the 2 shorter base poles with the large bolts to hold it firm.

Very Nice…

I’m the only one with a flag pole and so far no
complaints with my 2017 Harbor Freight $20 pole.

After the first season I did lube the collars and now thinking it enhanced longevity…

Memorial Day to Labor Day is typical for me…

All the vets had flags but they are all gone now and a few friends have cautioned me asking if I was inviting trouble…

Thanks for the compliments. I am getting so many ads on this page it keeps rebooting and keeping me from posting, so I am writing this from another app and will cut n paste, in case it looks odd.

I painted the pole with rustoleum metallic aluminum spray cans, (2). I sanded the pole with a used belt from my 4x36" sander. I used it like I was buffing out shoes at a shoeshine stand.

The pole is also bolted down to the base with 4-3/4" dia bolts, with lock washers and nuts. Prob overkill, but what the heck.

The cable used to lift was a 3/16" cable with a weight on one end, too large to fit thru the rebar loop. The other end was hooked onto the tractor. About 8' below the loop, the tractor end was wrapped around the "bi-pod" I made as a gin pole. That was a mistake. You can see that if you look close in the video, you see the bipod dangling when the pole came up. Took some real finagling to get the cable unwrapped. Duhhh

Once the bipod was off I wiggled the cable from the ground and got the weight to pull the cable back the opposite direction, ONLY after I tied a 1/4" dia rope to the tractor end. That rope goes up thru the rebar loop, and back down to the upside down L i mentioned earlier. The rope will be used to hook to the cable and pull it back up thru the rebar loop to lower the pole. This works, cause I failed to put the light switch in the correct position, and the first night of testing, it stayed dark. Grrrrrrr

Sooo down it came the next day, and the problem corrected.

BackRoad,

I saw one like that as well, with the three poles, and planned that style originally, but figured I'd never get all the holes aligned correctly, plus thought it might have enough movement to be noisy, so I opted to to the square base method.

I have a 1:05 (65 seconds) long video showing the pole on the ground, and the loop and L hook mentioned, so it might make more sense. The second time I lifted the pole I loosely wrapped the end of a 12ga wire over the cable, at the top of the bipod. This allowed me to just wiggle the cable free and let the bipod fall to the ground. Not perfect but it gets the job done, lol. I could post that video and link it, if so desired.

Same here with ads refreshing and overlays of ads…

My guess is something changed?
