Has anyone had the pleasure of replacing the PTO shaft on a 8540 or 9540? Looking to see if its a job we can do or if it needs to go to a shop. If anyone's had one replaced at a shop what did it run you?

A pto shaft sliding off from a batwing bushhog did the damage. We've filled and filled on the tractor shaft, but we can't get the new one on.

Thanks for any help.

How hard is it to remove the shaft from the housing? I'm sure we could get the housing off.

Not as large a tractor as M8540 but I replaced the broken pto shaft on my M4900 and pto assembly resembles 8540 but not as large. After unbolt interior plate on assembly shaft was relatively easy to replace then re-install plate and assembly. Sure wasn't difficult enough that I'd want to send tractor to dealer to pay $100 per hour for who knows how many hrs. PTO operated many hrs after that without a problem when I traded M4900 for a M7040
