Doing my 50 hour service this weekend, at 65 hours like most things in my life, and while I have read about "cleaning the screen" when changing the hydraulic fluid on other models, the 7040 manual makes no mention of a screen only wiping the magnetic filter clean as part of the process. Any info/advice would be appreciated.

I've done the 50 hr service on 2 of the xx40 series and have only found what you have already mentioned, the magnetic "stub" extending into one of the 2 hyd filters. Me thinks in Japanese translation, "filter" refers to the mag stub action you mention......in the 60's I bought an early generation Datsun PU truck....the manual said the electrical system operates on a 12 bolt system....maybe Japanese tech lit has come a long way?, or at least into our pocketbooks. bb

Thanks for the info. Makes tomorrow's project easier not having to deal with a screen.

I don't know if your tractor has screens or not but the trend seems to be away from them in modern tractors. Post #12 in the thread below gives a good explanation why. Basically, static electricity builds up in the screens and solidifies the oil which then blocks the screen and starves the HST. (Another example of "It seemed like a good idea at the time".)

as a footnote on the hyd filters, on my 7040 one of the filters came off easily, the other was extremely stubborn and had to use 2 filter wrenches at once to finally budge it...think they put it on dry at the factory w/o fluid around the seal. hope yours goes smooth, probably will. am sure you already know to use UDT fluid. also once filled, extend & lower on your FEL and raise & lower 3 pt then check level again. double check ft axle level again after some use as things settle good luck bb

Hugenpoet: your hard work & financial sacrifice will yield you many awesome hrs. on this machine. you should fashion a poem in the 7040's honor...or at least christen her and have a few good fluids yourself in celebration.
good luck bb
