M7040 and Rhino Turbo 96

Thanks again for all the input! At this point, I have spent a little time on the tractor with the cutter attached. With the FEL on the tractor the cutter doesn't seem too heavy at all. However, in the mountains I will want to take the FEL off to mow. I did just get the front tires back from being foam filled and they are HEAVY! In the process of taking off the front tires I discovered they were liquid filled. That led me to check the rears and sure enough they are filled also! The seller never even mentioned it. That explains why it was so much heavier than I expected when I loaded it up.

Looking into getting some suitcase weights that I could put on the front to mow and then move to the rear for heavy FEL work. I would really like the Heavy Hitch, but it looks like that is set up for JD suitcase weights. I think I can pick up some used JD weights easier than Kubota weights, but how do I make those work on the front without fabrication?

It looks like Ovrszd runs JD weights on the front of his M9540. Anyone else doing this? Is there a bolt on solution?

EDIT: I will post some pics soon!
The LA1153 has an option for a weight bracket. ~$500. You could probably make something if you have welder.

Just try it out with the loader off. I could run the 2wd M6800 just a couple weights. The M7040 has the weight of the 4wd, the loader frame, and you have the foam filled tires. You may be good enough without ballast weight. Now I wasn't running in mountains, but not flat ground either.

curious as to why you want to remove fel for mowing. if visibility is a problem, why not raise or remove bucket?

Me too big bubba. I keep my loader and bucket on, especially when I want to work steep ground.

I wonder what the blade tip speed is at 540 pto rpm? At least there's only 1 gearbox instead of 3 on 2 spindle cutter to contend with

That Brown would be one more heavy cutter. I'm looking at a semi mount Bush Hog 2010 to run behind my Workmaster 50 and Ford 4610 SU. At 2K pounds I only want either a pull or semi mount.

Some of the trails to get to the meadows are pretty tight. The FEL will make access to some of them more of a PIA, but I am sure it can be done. Maybe leaving the FEL attached is the best option. I am sure I will learn what's gonna work best as I get to know the tractor. Hauling it out to the mountain in July.

Are you aware there are two positions on the lower 3 pt arms for the lift links to attach to?

They are close together. One hole gives the ability to lift heavier weight at the expense of a bit of height loss.

The FEL on a M7040 has the same ability with the lift arms of the loader. More lifting strength or more lifting height.

Great pictures!!!! We'll look at all those you have!!!!

I have no concept of that much snow. I have a friend that lives in Southern Colorado. I've went out there in Winter. I've also 4-wheeled over a lot of Colorado. Sometimes in early Spring. It's amazing to me the amount of snow you still see in mid Summer!!!!

wbuffetjr1: I wanna go too Daddy !!!

That one pic is painful to see. I got hung in deep snow, alone on a snowmobile, in Utah once. Had to hike out for help.

Beautiful. Thanks for sharing. By the way -- Dave above is your best/at least a great/ source for anything about your 7040.

From the "unload off the trailer" point to the "in my meadows" point, how far do you have to move the tractor and cutter under it's own power ?

You might try just removing the bucket or forks and leaving fel on to reduce your length a little.

Thank you Dave. I moved the 3 point arms to the lower holes and both lift cylinders to the power position. So far the tractor has had NO problem lifting the Turbo 96. Doesn't seem to be an issue at all. Just concerns me that it is 800lbs heavier than what kubota recommends.

Ovrszd - Great pic! I would almost guess that pic is from Ouray, CO? Maybe Engineer or Imogene Pass? If so, the tractor will wind up about 35 miles from there! We spend a lot of time out that way and will permanently live out there in a few years.

JWR - Winter out there is no joke! Especially in remote areas it can become dangerous real quick. People do not realize how fast you can become immobilized if you have to travel in 4' or so of powdery snow with no shoe shoes!

Not counting helping mow any of my neighbors places, I have ~10 acres to mow out of a 40 acre lot so not too too far from the driveway to the any of the meadows. I do think I will use it "semi mounted" some just to try to take it easy on the tractor. I do not have a hydraulic top link or any of that. The Turbo 96 just has 2 manually adjustable wheels in the back.

4 years ago I started mowing these meadows, planting, clearing other ground, etc trying to improve the habitat around our place. We have cleared ~5 acres of HEAVY timber that was chock full of major deadfall. Hoping to use the 7040 for more clearing, moving downed timber, hauling rocks for habitat for our pond, etc.

All this hoping to improve the hunting situation. Then got this pic this past year!! I love it when a plan comes together!
