Anyone running a 6' rotary cutter behind a m7040? I was wondering how much wider it was than the tractor rears (if any)? The tread with specs are a little confusing. I measured one at the dealer that seemed to be set up at the widest possible seting and it was 79" side wall to side wall.

I have that setup with a BushHog. It works just fine. The tires do mash down a narrow strip that is not cut but the tires would do that with a 10' cutter as well.

I thought that it would be much more of a factor than it is. I mow twice anyway so just straddle the narrow strip the next week when the cutting is repeated. The same thing was done with a L3650 whose tire tracks were fully covered by the mower. You will always leave something.

Thanks for the reply.
I'm not really concerned about the matted grass from the tires though. I'm concerned with having a cutter that's wider than my rear wheels and having that hang up on trees and stumps when I'm rough cutting in the woods.
If I've figured things correctly, I think it will be flush or a little inside the rear track set as wide as possible with a 6' cutter. From your experience is that correct?

Thanks,

Rick

It should not be a problem, I run a Land Pride RCR2672 behind my L5030 without any problem which is narrower than the M7040.

You can have the dealer set up the tires at different width. I have a 6' behind a M5040 and it only sticks out a few inches, not a problem. I would prefer to have the cutter out 6-12", it allows you to mow close to fences, trees, etc. without scraping up the tractor or tires.

Yep, that is correct.

If you always cut on one side of the tractor's path you could adjust the 3PH over just a hair to make a closer cut.

The rearmost part of the mower would stick out a wee bit if that were done. However, the M7040's 3PH has multiple adjustments that would minimize that.

Thanks for the help guys.
I can get by with a couple inch overhang, but much more than that would cause problems in my application. I agree that having a cutter wider than the rear tires would be beneficial in a open or semi open field application, but I'm in the woods a lot, rough cutting trails and taming brush. Having 6 or 12 inches of over hang would be "hanging" me up all the time. Picture turning and your bucket just clearing a tree on one side and your rear tire or cutter rubbing a tree or stump hard on the other side. If that overhang catches, you can get pinned in real quick. Put the same situation on a hill side and you can easily work that tree between the tire and cutter. Then it's chainsaw time... Production really suffers.

My set up now is near perfect, rear side wall to side wall is 71" and my BB600 measures 67" at the widest point. I'm trying to get the m7040 set up as close as possible, but I'm not understanding the tread width spec in the brochure. It states the rear tread width to be 52.0" to 67.7", but when I went by the dealers lot and measured I got a wider measurement. There where three m7040's on the lot and the one that looked to be set as wide as possible measured 79.5" side wall to side wall. The BB720 has a spec'd "transport width" of 79.5", so it should be perfect. (If my measurements are right....)

Just trying to tell you all what I've found and how I've been figuring it to see what you thought or you could tell me from your experiences. Guess I'm also trying to justify selling my great condition BB600 and buying a new BB720. I'm going to be spending $1000 to get one more foot of cut....

That's good to know. Thanks.
There's probably quite a few things you can adjust and fine tune on a big tractor set up that I'm unaware of. There will be a getting used too period I'm sure.

We have a combination of open areas as well as tight woods. When mowing in the woods, I remove the FEL as it gives a smoother ride and more maneuverability.

There will be different tread width depending on tire size I believe. We got the largest Ag tires offered on our M8540.

I like as wide of mower as is practical and use a 10'6" Woods in open areas.

Check where the Kubota specs are measured. I think it's center to center, or maybe even inside to inside.

A M7040 in the woods with a loader? Challenging :confused2: unless you widen the trails. BTDT, had to get a chain saw to get out of the woods:mad:

I don't know what your trails are like, but I don't take the M5040 into the woods very much unless I have a straight, wide enough trail.

For my trails (6-10') , something smaller would be ideal.
