M6800 muffler

I have a M6800 and the muffler is shot. Just shy of $500 bucks for a new one. Thought about cutting it open and welding in a new pipe but nothing to weld to. Anybody with any ideas or should I just bite the bullet and get a new one and play around with the old one for a spare someday.

I found the picture in the parts diagram ( thanks Messick's for the useful app to look up such parts).
Looks like it is an oval muffler both ports on the same end. Assuming that the pipes in and out of it are in halfway decent shape, I would measure their outer diameter, pipe spacing, muffler dimensions, etc and look in a aftermarket muffler catalog to see if they make anything that is close for a better price.

Thats it. I was thinking of cutting it above the flange and mating a short piece to match up with the exhaust section. Then using a short vertical muffler above the hood. Only problem is have to remove muffler everytime I raise the hood.
