I'm getting real close to buying my first tractor and I wanted to ask if there is anything I need that a first time tractor owner might not think of. I'm looking at a 4WD M6040 for maintaining a couple miles of roads/paths, about 20 acres of deer plots, helping to build my vacation home and other miscellaneous tasks. For attachments, I'll want a FEL, brush mower, PHD, disc, cultipacker and either a BB or grader. Are there any options I should definitely go with? Do I need to add anything?

Unless you've pulled the trigger already, you should seriously consider the 7040 model with hydraulic shuttle. It would give you more pto hp implement future options, easier FELS work, and limited slip front end. The sticker difference is not that much up front....don't do like me and upgrade after the fact. Do it and don't look back. For your work, consider fluid filled rears unless you want the cast iron rims. Also, a leveler valve is useful, but not as much as the hyd. shuttle bb

I haven't done anything yet, probably in about a month. Are you saying that the hydraulic shuttle or the 7040 will make things easier. Is the only difference in the 6040 and 7040 is HP? Also, what is the leveler valve?

Dave: the hydraulic shuttle is available on both models I believe making FELS work much easier (seamless F/R action) the limited slip and additional HP/wieght on the 7040 should make excavation go somewhat smoother. the 7040 is just more machine...wish I had gone with the 8540 for my 127 acres but the 7040 is a hoss and does just fine. really, the price difference isn't really that much. bb

BTW limited slip is not avail. on the 6040
