Kubota m6040
I have a new to me Kubota M6040. it was hard to start a few times earlier this winter in my unheated barn, but it was never to far below freezing, a dose of power supply and 911 in the filters fixed that. but yesterday(40+ degrees out) I was using it to move snow around driveway and every 10 minutes running between 1000 to 1500 rpm not working it too hard it would start to sputter and stall. so im thinking it's pulling air, got water in the fuel, or there's still a bit of gell in a line some where. If any one has had a similar experience or knows of any diagnostic I could do to narrow down my hypothosis I'd greatly appreciate it. Before I bought the machine the lift pump was replaced, the water separator was bypassed and there was a badly patched hole in the fuel tank that I had plastc welded. I also hooked the water separator back up.

Wonder why the water separator was bypassed? Cracked bowl? Just a thought. Seems suspicious someone would do that unless they were or thought they were fixing a problem.

It is a diesel so here are some ideas.
Check and replace the fuel filter unless thats the water seperator
Check air filter for breathing
Check to see is the injection pump has a bleeder thats loose
Check the supply lines around suction from tank to fuel filter to pump
does the injection pump have a return line to tank
Could you have a loose battery connection and that is killing the fuel solenoid.
Check vent on fuel tank
I am out of race track

I did replace the the fuel filter which is separate from the water separator. and I dont believe the issue is tank venting because it will stall out with the fill cap off. the last 2 elements in the fuel system are 2 in line plastic fuel filters that no mention is made of in the operators manual. they seem to be stock filters because they are secured with the same type of clamps as the rest of the fuel lines. But they would be the most constricted spot in the supply line.

As Craig has stated so well the afformentioned items, it would be best to drain the tank if the "Usual Suspects" are not in evidence as the inlet may be clogging due to the fuel being pumped and pushing the unused fuel back into the tank.

Chances are the inlet line is collapsing or plugging from crap in the tank and that is a major issue as the tank has no basket strainer in the filler neck;

A strainer funnel or the water separator strainer funnel is a great investment as refined petroleum loves water and it sinks to the bottom of the fuel tank and so it can ice up easily as well.

Do you know if your water separator is working properly? In just one example
in my case my double wall bulk fuel tank has gotten so water and algae contaminated (even with fuel conditioner!!!) I am installing a Racor 500FG3 filter sytem in the delivery line to get rid if it all.

Which inlet are you refering to?

The fuel line leading directly from the tank to the first filter I would love to see a picture or two if possible.

If the tubing is not reinforced fuel tubing to the injection pump the injection pump creates enough of a pressure gradient that over time it will collapse it or be a plugged sewer for debris that is on the bottom of the tank.

Thats why I like the Racor filter units so much as they have full flow to 60 gallons per hour with the 500FG3 and nothing gets past them and the water is 99.99999 percent gone and if the fuel is so bad that it causes problems with water or debris the two to ten micron filtration will stop the motor dead.

All excellent ideas to check.

One more. Could you have introduced gasoline into the diesel fuel tank by mistake? The run and then stall after 10 minutes is a symtom of that problem.

No, but could that syptome be a result of adding too much power service? and I guess I'll look into a raycor filter. thanks

I just purchased my 500FG3 for $189 and change
from maesco.com - Mid-Atlantic Engine Supply Corp.

They come in smaller versions also for diesel
and gas power.

They also have the fittings in stock too and you
can use the 1/2 inch barbed fittings and hose clamps
or use the 1/4 inch size filter assembly if desired but
the water and debris bowl is smaller.

I would seriously think about buying the Racor hose for it too
to replace the old hose simply to bypass anymore issues with your tractor.

does anyone know how much$ per foot the small diameter silicone fuel line is on a new bota?

Try simple first. Is the tank vent pluged? Try loosening the fuel tank cap and see if it still stalls after 10 - 15 minutes. If not, then start throwing money at it.

Jim he said it would croak with the cap off:(

The issues with the tank definitely worry me though.

Must be getting old. I missed that in post #4. Sorry :ashamed:

No need to apologise Jim,
we are all friends here and we all want
him to have an orange beast of
burden that works right and is reliable
by fixing previous problems that happen
to crawl out from under the seat.

So I drained 8 or so gal. of fuel from my tank, saw no water. Then began removing the draw and return hoses from bottom of tank. When i pulled the draw line from the tank I noticed milky white drips form at the end of the hose. I heard that could be water??? all the lines seem to be clear of and sludge/ debris. I even took a peak inside the tank with a snap-on camera. There was no white residue in tank, and no trash particles big enough to block the fuel line inlet. I removed the two inline filters which were both in the return line from the IP and gave it a new peice of line. I now plan on cleaning the tank and lines with some old stanadyne inj. cleaner, installing a new fuel filter, cleaning the water sep. Then turning the key and hoping for the best.

My new BX2660 did the same thing. Turned out to be the fuel line was zipped tied too tight in the rear middle of the tractor causing fuel starvation....worth a look...

Just a thought hear but its worth a mention. My L4400 Kubota has a fuel bleed valve located on the injector pump to bleed the fuel system when you change the fuel filter. The manual states that if this valve (jet start valve) is left open it can cause intermittent stalling. Your machine may or may not have this valve but I would check and see. Here is a pic of the one on mine to give you an idea. Its item #80 on the PDF.

You are likely starving and or sucking air on the suction side, have you blown out all the lines? Right after it stalls pull a filter and see if it is dry. Sounds like the previous owner had problems too.

We had an international with this problem for years, finally took the whole suction side of the fuel system apart, the last banjo fitting before the fuel filter had a piece of timothy hay jammed in the little hole. Cured the hard start, hard prime, stalling, lack of power under full load etc.

Had a similar problem with a old tractor. It would run great sometimes for hours sometimes for minutes. It would loose power and then quite. After it would quite I would have to bleed air out of system. This went on far to long till one day I got a bright flashlight and looked in the tank and there was a piece of hose. About 1" x 12" rolling around in the tank. Sometimes it would roll over the fuel outlet in the bottom of the tank and starve the engine for fuel. Very frustrating but a simple fix.:confused2:
