Tires M59 Tires - Foam Filled?

Hi guys,

Got a quote today for filing the rear R4s on the M59 with foam...$1100 for the pair and they claim it will add about 1350lbs. to the rear.

What are ya'll paying for foam filling and how much weight does it add? Are these prices typical?

Mark that sounds about right. Foam filled a Bobcat skid steer and it was $1k for the four tires. Another thing to look at is the type of foam. Some cure very ridged and make for a rough ride while other types are more flexible. Expect the ride to be rougher with either type of foam.

Operation of a backhoe involves frequently picking up the rear end of the machine by downpressure with the hoe and moving it side to side by swinging the boom, or "crawling" by pulling yourself along with the hoe. An extra 1350 lbs might not allow this.

I know my JD dealer strongly discouraged filling my rear tires...

have foam filled all 4 tires on my m59. Love it. Probably added 2k in weight, which would affect towing, but I don't tow. Around a buck a pound seems the going rate - that seems reasonable.

CurlyDave - M59 has a crawl control, so no need to do it with the hoe. I think the hoe can still lift the rear end, but honestly it doesn't come up for me, so I can't remember. The rear throttle/directional control makes a big difference in how one moves it.

My JD 110 TLB also has a creeper -- there is a difference between using that function and using the hoe to reposition, often a very significant difference.

Just as one simple example, I do not see how it would be possible to cross a trench if I could not pick up the rear end with the hoe and push the machine forward...

Dave I agree that there is a difference. Often I move my tractors around with the backhoe. I know that Kubota does not recommend loading the tires on their cab and commercial TLB models. I have always considered it a liability issue due to the extra weight in a rollover. There is a higher center of gravity on both types of tractor.

You do make a point I have never considered though. The added weight does limit the stabilizers lift capacity and the ability of the hoe to move the extra weight. Personally I find loaded tires to be such an improvement in stability and traction I still have to go that way.

I have to admit I'm curious now, I'll mess around next time the hoe is on, I'm still in 3pt time. I've always crossed ditches by just driving over them, why would you do otherwise? Genuinely curious, may just be an aspect of my usage so it hasn't come up for me.

Kubota M59 is a very light but strong machine for its size. I have my operating weight of my L39 at 8,100 to 8,300 Lbs depending on whats on the QA.

Foam them, There should be no concern lifting an moving side to side if it is only 1,350 lbs more with the bigger M59.

If my L39 was bothered by the extra 850 Lbs over the rear, I'd not have been able to extricate the machine out of sme really hairy situations or hop trenches, etc.

Thanks for all the info guys. I never thougtht about what CurlyDave mentioned. The Kubota manual says to add CC to the tires if no backhoe is installed, and that it is not necessary with the backhoe. If you frequently remove it, as do I, I would like to have the extra weight for loader work.

Is CC the same weight as foam?

I wonder what Kubota has to say about CC and the backhoe?

Nope...not yet...I've been running them empty. I just thought about getting them filled the other day.

Not to resurrect an eight year old thread but for reference, I have had no problems running my tires filled with water and anti-freeze on a 2014 M59 now for about 2 years (~250 hours of use). One thing I have found are my tires aging quite quickly mostly fronts (unfilled) and getting cut-up in the rears; perhaps due to the extra weight or being stored outside in the dry Colorado air. I do store mine under cover though; Walmart's XL RV tire covers fit the fronts great and I hang canvas tarps over the rears.

I have found that the extra rear weight is essential with an M59 for some of my work. I have been clearing rocky land with a heavy grapple and a light rear ripper bar being the only implement out back often on steep sidehills and carrying cut trees on my land going down those steep hills. Still no issue lifting the back with the stabilizers even when filled.
